Wow, were you in a more urban location in NC??? I know city locales do up the premiums. I just couldn't believe how much mine dropped.... I mean it was almost 50%....

24k per month washing pools, I am in !
Where else can you make that kind of money.............no where!!
|
That's washing over 13 pools a day over a 30 day month with no days off. Yeah, gee. Let's tell everyone to work 12 hour days with no days off and tell them how "easy" it is.... Trust me sunshine, you're not in. You'd break down on the first day after washing the 4th pool....
Let's begin dividing this $24K out to everyone that contributes to this operation and slowly start to get an understanding of how much $$$ everyone is REALLY making here...
]This is a false implication that these two wash all of these pools themselves and make $24K a month. Not feasible.

Now if you could only get it through your skull that many people, "Dislike it but may not have left yet or have left and thier wives are happier and kids are happier for it and that's all that counts." for other people.
The most rediculous thing I've noticed about your posts is that you can't even settle for "To each thier own". No, it's either people love Florida or they're poor, miserable, delusional people who just can't or couldn't hack it. (ie. Your opinion is fact. Other opinions are just wrong.).
It's really a load of garbage.

City-Data's main demographic are simply people looking to re-locate and are asking questions about various places.
Ya know that some people that are doing okay financially do so because they know a bargain when they see one, and they also no when something is no longer a bargain. No one ever got rich spending extra money simply because they can, and no one likes to pay more for things just because.
While a few here seem to like Florida but have been forced to leave due to financial circumstances, there are many that left because economically Florida simply became, "Not worth it anymore".......
Say I have $40K. I can afford a Mercedes, but if I buy a Hyundai for $18KI can live well within my means and have plenty of $$$ for other things. Then one day the Hyundai gets to be $35K then heck, I might as well ditch it and buy the Mercedes.
That's MY metaphor for why I was in Florida and why I left it. At the pre-2003 COL it was worth staying and enduring the many things I disliked about the state. In the last 4 years it became a logical choice that if I was going to pay that kind of money that I might as well move somewhere I liked that cost around the same.
Was I miserable??? No
Was my family miserable??? No
Are we ALL happier now that we left??? Yup
Are we paying more to live where we wish to be??? Nope
Would we have been prior to 2003??? Yup
Simple deductive reasoning really...

I don't know much about pool business. I don't think they actually wash the pool. I think they measure PH and add something to adjust pH. They also skim the surface of the pool (they use remote controlled skimmers too) and remove something from bottom using a pool vacuum system. The filter may be cleaned but not every time. With the available technology, I don't think it is as hard as you described. They actually work four days a week (long hours 6am-6pm). Again, It is easy for me to say since I am not doing the work.

I worked cleaning pools with my best friend one day that cleaned pools full time for a while just to help him out with his work load that week and he would make about $500 a week and that was working 4 days a week and sometimes 5 days depending if there was more pools that he didnt have time to clean and he would clean about 7 -9 pools within an 9-10 hour day. He stopped doing it though and moved on to serving food at "Amigos" restuant. When i cleaned the pools with him it took about 30-45 minutes to do everything with one pool (unloading the equipment , and doing the work, and loading everything back up) and driving to the next pool would vary time wise

Gee I wonder why Florida has the largest inventory of houses up for sale in the U.S. that never sell??? Every sign has "reduced" on it around here.
Good luck to all you who stay and like it here...

I lived in Florida for 35 years and it has been going down hill for the past few years. It may have been ok back in the 80's when the price of houses were less but now it is insane to pay rent for what most owners are charging. The people living there are being over charged and priced out of their homes or apartments. The only benefits are for those who are either qualified based on their income or if they apply for housing programs such as section 8 (their waiting list is indefinite), HUD or low-income assistance. Otherwise you MUST have a good paying job or own a business to keep up with the forever increasing rates of homes, apartments, insurance and the cost of living period. Congrats to you for making the right move.

I've found the heat and humidity wears most folks down over the years and they end up indoors in the A/C most of the time anyway. Most raised here who don't need to work outside stay in the A/C all the time and appreciate the benefits of FL living least of all..
Those who make a fortune made it through RE down here. Majority with wealth came here from other places. For a state of 18M we are seriously lacking in real business and industry. Housing, the main engine might be in the crapper for a long time hurting many folks who made a nice living from it during the bubble.. For the well educated looking for a good high paying professional career it will be tough unless you are in health care..

That is why I decided to take the leap. Florida does not pay well in other professions. It seems ok in the first few months or years. My nephew stayed one year and went back to his home town.
