Its actually a rather charming town, with a vibrant arts scene.
Anyplace on the beach is going to have its share of snowbirds, and tourists, but there are enough locals to counteract them.
NS is mine and my husbands town of choice to go to when we want to go to the beach, he is an Orlando native, and has always said NS is the most unspoiled of the local beach towns.

Wow, we agree on something.

NSB is awesome.

We have been there a couple times since we moved to Florida.

I have a great picture of the protected turtle areas on NSB I will post soon.

Thats the beauty of being a long time resident, one can look at things in an unbiased manner and know a place for what it truly is, long after the "newness", and the inherent prejudice slanting in favor of the new place that comes with being a new resident, has worn off.

Just out of curiosity, is that true about it being as hot in NS as St. Pete? I've been looking at the daily weather for some time now in several Florida cities and it doesn't look that way. Maybe global warming has really changed things, but when I lived in Daytona I don't remember many days where the heat index (forget the actual temperature) was 110 to 115 like it has been for a loooong time in the Tampa area.

What I remember most about New Smyrna is the Turtle Mound, down at the south end of the beach. It's a native midden, mostly of shells, and is apparently the highest in the country. Nice little area. The same Indians, apparently, wintered inland around Blue Springs State Park, which is also a lovely area.

The beach is nice at NSB as well, although I remember getting bitten by sand fleas on one visit--one problem I never had in all my visits to the south end of Daytona Beach, all the way down to Ponce Inlet.

I agree, that's my experience as a native/long time resident as well.

Smile New Smyrna Beach

Hi again,

If eveyone is afraid of moving to a town because they hear it is "conservative" then that is what it will always be.
Actually Seminole County taxes are much lower and we lived there for
a many years. Originally we were going to move to New Smyrna but because
we loved the beach and also wanted easy access to every part of central Fl
we went to Longwood where we enjoyed N.S. beach regularly yet also could get to Orlando and other interesting parts of the state. i.e. Sanford, Mt Dora, beaches, Casadega... not a lot of hurricanes as you mentioned either. E.

Well, I live in NSB if you come back to read this! I love my town, but would only live beachside. It is laid back, and both conserative and liberal depending with whom you hang! We have fantastic arts programs with tons of festivals/fairs and monthly "doin's". However, it can definitely be BORING as during the off season, hardly anyhone is out on weekdays after nine. But the beach is FANTASTIC and not as crowded at Daytona; plus we have the Canaveral Seashore where hardly anyone goes!!!! It is cooler here than in Tampa, I do believe, and we are in some sort of alcove where hurricanes seem to miss us as direct hits.

If you haven't decided yet where to go, I would give NSB a look!!!

I live in the area and think for what you're looking for in your OP that NSB is worth your time investigating. Although I didn't find many of the replies posted to be accurate (or worth absorbing), I think it is an active, vibrant community for 60+ and has a sprouting arts community.

I moved to this area for the milder summers, but have found that the last 3 years here have been extremes as you mentioned in your quote. This area has had record temps for summer and winter the past 2 years -- and for duration as well. I believe this is the trend for global warming: shorter spring and fall weather.

My best observation about the area (and a lot of Florida) would be to understand how the "Bible Belt" areas and the local Feudal Rural Plantation Economy effects social libralism on a local scale -- and there are solutions to finding your niche by focusing on the pockets that mirror your interests and values (just maybe some harder work doing so in getting established in a new community that may include years you don't have or are interested in investing).

Other suggestions for areas to consider (which may include climate trade-offs or Gulf Coast):
  • St Augustine
  • DeLand
  • Miconopy
  • Delray Beach
  • Lake Worth
  • Islamorada
  • Stuart/Jensen Beach
  • Fernandina Beach
  • Sanibel/Captiva Islands
  • Siesta Key
Also remember that well-bred people may disagree with your views and values but would most likely respect yours too. It's a question of your own personal comfort zone of being surrounded by differing points of view -- instead of being threatened by it. (And yes, in some rural, ignorant communities could incite violence as well. )

Even in Colorado!
