Wink Considering moving from Pittsburgh to Florida--seeking advice.

Hello All,

I am seriously considering moving from Pittsburgh to Florida in the near future. I am absolutely in love with the place. I have visited Orlando, where I have family, Tampa, and Miami. I liked all three, but I think I would most enjoy living in Miami. However, based on some of the things I have read here about the city, I am not sure. The office where I work now has different locations across the country, including near all three of these cities, and I am currently trying to be transferred to an office in Florida. So, hopefully, I will at least move there already employed.
Some background about me...I am a 28 year old college-educated single woman of both Black and Caucasian heritage. I don't speak Spanish, but I am willing to learn. I have lived in Pittsburgh all of my life with the exception of college. No offense to Pittsburgh lovers out there, but I can't live her anymore! I need a major change, and I figure now is the best time to do it since there is nothing keeping me here.
So, I am just looking for some general advice and opinions on relocating to any of these three locations. I would like to do this within the next year. I appreciate any and all comments, and thanks for your help!

I wouldn't place a lot of credibility on what you've read about Miami, particularly in a chat forum where people can really fling the BS. Much of the negativity about Miami stems from racial discrimination/hatred, as many have issues with non-English speaking Miami residents and the premise of a bi-lingual city. Miami is a wonderful cosmopolitan city that has a lot of cultural offerings, world class entertainment and nightlife, excellent restaurants of many ethnicities, beautiful beaches and mostly great weather. Like ANY big city it has issues with crime in specific areas where you wouldn't most likely ever find a reason to visit or attempt to live. If you like Miami, I would encourage you to check it out, and possibly make the move. Good luck and enjoy Florida!

Miami is not as bad as its reputation suggests.

If you have a job lined up, I say go for it. The worst that can happen is that you end up not liking it!

Check out downtown/Brickell for urban living, and Miami Beach offers a nice lifestyle as well.

If you get the opportunity you should definitely go for it!

The only thing I'd emphasize when considering Miami is the location, location, location aspect of where you choose to live. In the Brickell area or out on the beach you'll have everything you need (dining/entertainment/shopping/new friends) right out your door - it just feels like the 'good' part of the Miami lifestyle. If you're 5 miles inland you're surrounded by miles and miles of sprawl, and you'll spend a lot of time driving to and from the areas with all of the stuff going on. I lived in both during my time out there and Miami on the water felt like vacation every time I came home. Miami inland felt like any other city.

^^^ I agree, though feel Coral Gables is worth the effort and lacking in the sprawl feel. Otherwise the few miles or more inland rule certainly applies in my opinion. Coral Gables, Florida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You have everything going for you in your quest to make a successful move to Florida. You are leaving Pittsburgh with your youthful exuberance, Florida family, an education, the motivation to acclimate to the culture, and an open mind. Best of all, in this economic downturn, is that you have a real Florida job. It sounds as if you have really nothing to lose, but everything to gain by exploring your Florida opportunities. Your best bet would be to spend as much time staying in the region(s) that pique your interest most, but family might make your transition smoother. Sounds like the Orlando region might be the best place for you to start. Just my two cents, but Florida's gain is certainly Pittsburgh's loss. The best of good fortune to you in your endeavors!!

Great post, coach! I agree. When people have a good plan things usually work out. I think it's great to have those adventures when one is young, too. I don't know that much about Miami, but I bet you'll have a great time there - it's a big city with a lot going on! But Tampa or Orlando could be a good choice too - Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response; this was very motivational and made me feel great! Oh course I am a bit scared about all of this, but I figure if I am going to do it, that now is the time. I hope to go back down to Miami in November or December to check it out again. I really hope that my office can find something for me in Florida; I would take pretty much any opportunity I was offered

Thanks! I didn't expect to get such positive responses after the other things I have read on here!
