Ain't that the truth!

This idea that taxes have been going up and up around the country is so bizzare to me. Even my property taxes are lower in Miami Beach than they were several years ago.

I won't disagree on the car insurance going up but I will disagree on property taxes going up. My car insurance keeps going up. I was told it's because of all the accidents and uninsured motorists in FL. My real estate taxes have been going down for about 2 or 3 years. They were $1900/yr but now they are just over $1500/yr.

Could the reason be that it's because the assessed value of your home is declining as well?

Most likely the case.

Could the reason why property taxes went up so much that people felt they had to flee was because the "assessed value" (which doesn't even reflect what most homes are selling for) was based on ballooning, bubble values?

That's fine with me. As stated earlier, I wanted to avoid the Florida North - not due to the natives but the lovely transplants - and Yankee South. I had enough of the shallow folks looking for a cheaper deal and some place they could pave and turn into their own.

But I wonder how much you know about the Knox MSA. I'm told that Oak Ridge has the largest concentration of PhDs in the country. Consequently, they have great schools, as does Knox and Maryville. Yet, we still have a majority of Southerners and a revitalized and restored city center.

Shutting up now...

I've heard a lot of cities claim that.

I appreciate it. I could never find evidence to back that up and I hate those sort of claims. It's not usually like me to do that without some sort of link. There are a few people on the Knoxville forum that tout that. Mods, actually. I'll keep these links.

By the way, on the second link OR would not show up. It only has 27,000 people.

But of course, there is an incredible amount of scientists in Oak Ridge and I still love it here.

But thanks!

Sadly, that is the truth. Yes, I'm glad the taxes are lower, but I'm not happy about the decrease in value.

Hmm. Not to belabor this but the Anderson County website has it as the fourth largest concentration of PhDs in the country. And outside of Oak Ridge, Anderson County probably doesn't have that many. A lot of them spill into our county. As I previously related, Oak Ridge is a very small town. It may not have the largest numbers but I would not be surprised by the concentration.
