Tks for the responses. Let me guess the state income tax at 7 pct, add on the 8 pct sales tax and that means 15 percent of my paycheck has just gone to sales tax and income tax. Plus the house tax, the car tax, yikes.

You spend all of our paycheck on items with a sales tax ? Me thinks your math is a little off ...

Well in NC you pay Property tax on your Home, and Your Car...Your income tax and then Sales Tax....so yes alot of ones paycheck is going to pay all these taxes..if you dont own home well then scratch that off..however compared to our 13k in NJ we paid for property taxes in NC our taxes were 2195.00 a Year and we had a 3000 sq ft house in NC....Oh you will also find Car Insurance Much lower in NC as well compared to here....so there are definitely trade offs....But we would still rather be here than there

In comparison, New Jersey is tops in the nation for tax burden and New York is second.

To reiterate, North Carolina is 16th which is still very high and Florida is 31st which is darn low.

By the way, Tennessee is 47th. It depends on where you live regarding bang for the buck, though. Lots of places don't offer much in services but where we live the services are the best I've ever seen and that includes Massachusetts. But I will shut up before I am really, really sorry.

A friend of mine sold his place in Spring Hill a few months ago and bought a place in Gainsboro . Is that near you? He really loves it up there.

Uh-oh. See...

Why do I get diarrhea of the keyboard?

No. Gainsboro is in the middle of the state. It's a tiny town that is kind of "removed."

I'm in Knoxville. It's a very small city that seems more like a large town. I'm able to pretend that I am urban when in fact I reside in a Mayberry on steroids. I-75 runs right through here and we are fairly close to the Smokys and Cumberlands. The weather is kind of four seasons "lite" or as I call it, Goldilocks weather. It's "just right." I know. I'm kitschy.

sigh.

North Carolina's tax burden is 16th in the country. Florida's is 31st. Frankly, NC will gets you with hidden taxes all day long and twice on Sunday. And I don't feel there is that much bang for the buck.

The Tax Foundation - State and Local Tax Burdens: All States, One Year, 1977 - 2009
That is somewhat helpful of a statistic but it really comes down to the town you live in. You could be going from the lowest taxed city in NC to the highest in FL. Someone living in Chapel Hill is getting taxed much higher than "16th" and someone living in Gainesville is getting taxed much more than "31st".

That's the entire tax burden, bear in mind. It has far more than property taxes in its equation, for instance.

But yes, if you need more information you would have to do your own research. But this list is an excellent rule of thumb.

I live in a town that gets an excellent bang for the buck with great schools, an incredible police force, 43 miles of greenways - not to mention the parks - and on and on but I pay a bit more than some very rural town in the same state. I still come out ahead compared to Florida.

But I also save on other things like car insurance. You'd also have to check rates for that and many other things. Ultimately, you have to do your own research.

But as a whole, North Carolina is pretty expensive and a lot of it has to do with sneaky little taxes that they throw in such as paying tax on your vehicles every year. MA use to do that too. It will add up and drive you nuts.

I think this post is patently false. I know many people, outside of Florida, who know very well what MENSA is and are members.....

He was referring to the Spanish word and apparently didn't know about the organization. It put everything into a new light.
