From what I have learned Naples is a beautiful area to live....if you can afford it. I think that is the biggest problem with people who relocate....the don't actually do the math and then come down and find that they cannot afford to live in the area they chose. Now the people I really feel sorry for are those who lived in Florida for years and can no longer afford to live. But for those who come to Florida for a few months and hate the cost, heat, traffic, etc. I am sorry but do the homework and know what lies ahead. You can't prepare for everything, but at least you have to realize a little about what you are getting yourself in for.

Thank you, thats how a lot of us "complainers" feel. We're not the ones who suddenly moved down there on a whim with dreams of palmtrees and sand find we can't afford it and then move and complain about Naples. .Many of us had or have been there for 20+ years. Yes USED to be able to afford it. It was cheap and beautiful at one time. We've delt with a WHOLE lot more than people who have lived there for 5 years and rave about the place. We've lived through way more hurricanes, developments, buildups, construction and just destruction of the place we once loved. I'm sure many of the people here can't remember when Naples had farms where major intersections now are, or drive in theaters in naples park, or RC car races where walmart now is in naples park. Those were wonderful things that people would do as a community in Naples.. People genuinly liked each other and knew each other.

It make us angry that the northerners (wherever that may be from) came in, thought it was "such paradise" that they just HAD to change it to make it like they had up north so it could be a true Northerners southern paradise if that makes sense. Live there for another 15 years min. and then tell me how wonderful it is when its looks like Miami with the gangs and crimes to go with it.. Its well on its way anyways.

Or remember when Capt Nemo's was the start of north Naples. No name storm opened up the pass and removed the tennis court at the Bonita beach club. Fort myers Beach had nothing past the Reef restaurant. Lime Green Fire Trucks! Very well said,

"Northerners" who came down had money. What do they have to do with drugs, gangs, and Naples becoming Miami?

That stuff comes from the horrible immigration policies over the last 40 years, it has zero to do with "northerners". Those farmers and other industries you speak of from the past....who do you think was hiring most of those illegals???

Blame the transplants for some things but put the blame for drugs, gangs, and illegals where it should be.

The northerner who came down with the money knocked down the things like farms and build up our once peaceful quite beaches. They are also ones who with all their money build drug smuggling businesses across alligator alley, well 41 before the new alligator alley. Not all of course but the drug tycoons didn't help, and they're still there today. Human and drug smuggling are HUGE across the alley, and where does the alley bring you , straight to Naples.. Don't think all those houses in Port Royal are lawyers and doctors..

Oh firemed, I remember the fire trucks, my father was a firefighter in Naples and still is. Remember the movie theater in Coastland that still allowed smoking? or the arcade in there... Imagine sitting at the corner of airport and pineridge and staring at a farm and open land on all corners.. cause it did look like that. Thats the Naples I'll always remember, and instead of that stupid overpass they built across Airport and GG I'll remember the strawberry U-pick farm we used to go to to get fruit for our pies.. The past is the past but what it has become is a terrible pity, there is no pride in preserving anything in that town.. No old houses, or historic values. Everything is about preserving the birds and the plants.. which I agree is very important, but very hypocritical when its okay to throw them in a zoo to see them and "preserve" then yet we can't keep one intersection open land for a natural preservation cause a new shopping mall is MUCH MORE important.. as if there aren't enough. Now they're talking about expanding 75.. Hell I remember when 75 didn't reach Naples! 41 was the only way to go.... Look at places like the waterside shops, they're fairly new., I'd say no older than 8 years old or so.. They were very nice with the waterfalls and rocks, but nope that wasn't updated and hip enough for Naples, tore that up and pour concrete, stainless steel and blue colored tiles to simulate that really blue water. Its terrible you couldnt' even walk around there during the day for fear of being blinded or walking into a ray of super powered sun magified off the steel. You might combust!!!

Karry is on a distinguished road
I remember buying my boiled peanuts from some roadside stand in Golden Gate.In fact there were other signs selling boiled peanuts. The U-Pick-It farms. And the only landmark to get over to Radio Rd. to take your drivers test was the Italian Club and a 7-11. Old Timers that were so young at heart. My son when he was 12 would get jobs just putting together break-down furniture. Like the bookcase in a box type of thing. Then a few yrs. ago some poor kid tried to have a lemonade stand and she needed a ven. license. I remember Naples when it was fun to live here.

Actually that girl was trying to raise money for her cancer. She was on Jay Leno for that, she has since died I believe The neigbors called because it was an "eye sore" in the neighborhood and complained she was running a business without a license. The police officers did now want to to shut her down but didn't have a choice, they both bought drinks from her as an apology.. Not much else they could do I suppose. Also there was a boy who built his own tree house in a lot by his house and the neighbors complained that he did not have a building license and it was not up to code.. He had to tear it down... When my husband was a 911 operator for the sheriffs office he recieved a call from a lady downtown who had a condo on the beach, she said two children were defacing public property and she wanted them arrested. The police got there and it was two children around the age of ten writing in the sand, below her condo things like fart and poop.. Not the naughty versions just the stupid kid versions that they thought was funny. The cops pretty much told her there was nothing to be done. The best though, is this once call he got.. This woman was legally blind, she called to say that someone in the neighborhood was passing out orange stickers, and they put on on her drivers side windshield and she wanted to know how when she drove to the store how was she suppose to see if she couldn't get it off. Legally blind mind you.. It was a flyer it was sticker because she parked illegally and was going to get towed... Imagine that..

But you have to remember all of these people did us a favor by moving here and helping us become like them!

This has nothing to do with anything, but this is how those internet rumors and urban legends get started. Avigayil Wardein, the lemonade stand girl, did not have cancer. In fact, she ended up being the spokesman for an actual lemonade stand that you could purchase, with her picture on the box.

I just wanted to gently set the record straight.

My mistake I remember the incident, but mixed her up with the wrong child. I was thinking of this girl

Alex Scott, the young cancer patient who raised money for cancer research by opening a lemonade stand, wanted to take in $1 million. She died in August but, as Tracy Smith reported on The Early Show, that goal has been reached.
