Default What's a good place to visit in Florida for a week in January?

Not interested in nightlife or drinking in seedy bars, can do that at home in Pittsburgh.

Just a quiet town, not terribly expensive, perhaps with a dog or harness track and a mall nearby in a low-crime area. Can't see spending more than a buck and a half a night for a hotel room.

Main thing I'd like is excellent sunny weather to unwind from the tundra expected up here in 2 months.

Try Bonita Springs. It fits the bill.

Hollywood (which is located between Fort Lauderdale and Miami) would be a good choice. You can get reasonably priced airfare in/out of the nearby Fort Lauderdale airport (FLL). Hollywood has a wonderful Broadwalk, a nice beach, is fairly quiet overall and has the dog track, horse racing and my fave (Jai-Alai) close by. For accommodations check out the Ocean Inn which is as the name suggests, oceanfront and a great value.

In January go as far south as you can. Ft. Lauderdale/Miami may be the place you are looking for. Heck, you may want to look into a cruise.

I agree with the above. Florida's going to be pretty cold everywhere around that time. You may want to look into a cruise to the islands.

Accuweather suggests that the average January high is about 76 in south Florida, and into the 50's at night. Hardly "cold" by my reckoning although we may have a different opinion on that.

Or is that a misleading figure?

Bonita Springs high in January is 75, low is 53. It has a beautiful new mall, a dog track, reasonable rates, small quiet town, nice beach. It's just north of lovely Naples and the Everglades. You might like to take an airboat ride!
