Hey there, I currently live in England and i am looking to attend a college in Florida next year.

Top of my list at the moment is Brevard Community College (Cocoa Campus)..Does anyone have any info on this college and surrounding areas?? Are there many Brits who live there?

Any advice that you can give me on being an International Student in Florida would be much appreciated...

You are quite safe! I worked in Cocoa for a while in 1996, I had no problems.
Cocoa Beach on the other hand, may have more crime, more bars (beligerent?) people on vacation. I commuted from Titusville about 18-20 miles north of Cocoa. I love Titusville! Americas Space Port!

Whomever said that Florida is a "high crime rate" state.....tsk tsk. I can't speak for Daytona/Brevard county for I don't live there. I have visited but never lived there. Anywhere you live be it FL, NY , England, Holland, you name it, there will be bad apples.
I would suggest that before you move, you need to come and visit and get a feel for the place. Contact a relocation specialist and go around different area's. The internet is a great tool for research.Dont just take anyones word for it. We were thinking of moving to Austin, TX. Hubby and I visited twice, and have decided to put it on the back burner. We just love it here....can't afford to upgrade anymore but it's awesome.
Alex

I live in Nottingham and that has one of the highest crime rates in England but like you say Alex, wherever you go there are bad apples. I really cannot afford to come and visit beforehand so any other views would be much appreciated. I have visited Florida before and absolutely loved the place and people - I know cost of living is quite expensive compared to other states but nowhere near as expensive as England. Ive done quite a lot of reserach but just would like any other views/opions etc...Many thanks..

Compared to the major metropolitan areas of Orlando, Miami, Tampa, etc., crime rates are low in the Brevard area, as are home and apartment prices.

Brevard county has a nice beach scene, but it's not all that exciting otherwise. BUT, it is only a short drive to Orlando (maybe an hour or less) for nightlife, theme parks, etc. LOTS of Brits in the Orlando area.

I don't know anything about Brevard County Community College, but remember that Community Colleges in the United States typically are two year programs, and then you have to transfer to a University (though in Florida, if you graduate from a community college with your associates degree, you are guaranteed admission into a Florida University).

I'm sure you can easily make friends. Americans have this glowing affinity, generally, for British people that should work to your advantage. I apologize in advance for any stupid cultural questions you'll have to field from Americans however, lol.
