FL comes in at #47 out of the 50 states in students completing HS.

Yes it is bad when real teaching goes by the wayside due to a teachers only being worried about FCAT scores so they can keep their jobs.

Its a tricky balance between who benefits most, corporate wealth or more low paying jobs where education is not valued.
You do realize that states with the highest taxes, including income taxes, are also the ones that are having the most financial difficulty?

Florida's revenue stream is just fine, Florida is around 21st in tax revenue per capita, that would put it above quite a few states with an income tax.

Entrepreneurs - this isn't just tech but any industry. I have two friends in complete different fields. One made a fortune starting a commercial landscaping company down in Ft Myers. The other started a Commercial Carpet Cleaning service that does a majority of the hotels around Orlando.
Real-Estate Investors
Stock Investors
Store Owners
Store Managers
Computer Programmer
Mechanic
Plumber
Journalists

Just to name a few of these so-called crappy jobs.

Again the only thing that requires a degree are things strictly regulated like Lawyer, Doctor, Architect, Structural and Civil Engineer. Then Professors and Teachers.

The majority of jobs in the world don't require degrees.
Many jobs require a degree, not those that you listed. My job requires a degree, my company (finance sector) will not even look at someone without one. Military commissions require a degree for the most part, so do a whole host of other fields.

While it is debatable if a degree is required for some of these fields at the entry level, fact is many employers use college as a filtering tool for their entry level programs. Too many court decisions regarding EEO have occurred for an employer to really risk having their own entry level system, any adverse impact will invite a lawsuit from the gov.

As far as the things on the list, even Bill Gates hires college grads, many of the jobs at Microsoft require a degree and they will not look at you without one, same with Dell, Apple, and the others.

Business owners of course do not need a degree, but i will venture to say that many do hire people with a degree, especially when it comes to finances if it is a larger type of business. Many plant managers have a degree as well whereas decades before it was rare.

I am an electrician by trade, but got out of that business a long time ago.

"Its because the average employee would rather hire someone with work experience over a degree every single time without question but people are spending to long in school learning skills that employees don't care about."

Of course employers want experience first, but fact is that unless people are born with experience, someone is going to have to teach them. Many employers have entry level positions, many of those positions are reserved for college grads. My employer even has a great entry level program and recruits only college grads, and it even recruits just from a handful of schools. There is a long list of employers that only recruit people out of college for certain positions.

Of course a person can work their way up, it happens frequently, but less so now days. But the process is much faster with a degree, and there will not be that glass ceiling when the non-degree person gets up towards the top. I work around a few of the tech types who just have some certs and no college, but they will never be the senior project manager, or the IS manager, it just will never happen.

Florida had a very high % of the top high schools. State and district rankings are useless for the individual. You can get in zone for good school if you try.

Looking simply at graduation rates without considering other things like Newsweek high school rankings, SAT scores, AP test rankings and other standardized testing doesn't give a complete picture.

It's easy to manipulate graduation rates by making it easier to graduate.

This isn't the first time Alexander has thrown a temper tantrum when someone questions his superiority.
i'm anti gun, pro gay and didn't vote for any of these freaks. unfortunately i'm in the minority here.
