If work is part of your plan as mid 50s adults, I would look to areas where there are enough professional jobs that you're not competing with many others for such jobs or the opposite where you're competing against teenagers and twenty-somethings for service economy jobs as a couple of major cities here lack in those professional level occupations. I would recommend checking out the Jacksonville area first as it has the lowest unemployment rate of any of the big cities in Florida (9.0%) and has a diversified economy versus Orlando for example which is heavily service-economy oriented. There are some nice areas to check out that range from beach town to traditional suburb to revitalized in-town neighborhoods. Check out the established in-town neighborhoods of Riverside/Avondale, Springfield and San Marco. For beach living you can't go wrong with Ponte Vedra Beach, Amelia Island or Neptune Beach (prefer the west side). For traditional suburbs look at Julington Creek or Mandarin on the south side.

First have jobs lined up before moving here, that alone will be a challenge based on the dismal market.

Also think about what your kids will want to do, are they college educated or just high school grads? What type of work will they do? What do you want for their future? Parts of Florida are lower cost but the job market is equally poor with poor pay, the more expensive areas pay more but at a higher cost of living. It's not uncommon to see parents with their adult children still living at home because they alone can't pay the rent or even afford to ever buy a home.
