Florida, you really do not want to live in perry. Im sure it has a few cute local shops and restaurants, but it is full of racist, hillbilly type people. You wont find much sophistication if you get my drift.

I would strongly recommend you live on the outskirts of Tallahassee so you have access to the city. If you choose to live in perry you will be living the high life shopping at Wal-Mart.

I have lived in Tallahassee my whole life and driven through perry... Oh wait did they tell you about the lovely smell of the entire town? Its stinks literally from the paper mill nearby.

So if you enjoy lowlife, and literally smelling garbage when you wake up every day live in perry.

Perry is a dump, and full of crime and stinks. You would do better elsewhere.

It's also home to the state's only "industrial river", the Fenholloway River. The state lets companies dump unlimited toxic **** into the river and it's a complete dead zone.

Default Come See for Yourself

@5toflorida Come experience Perry for yourself before judging. There are many misinformed comments here.

Yes, Perry lacks many of the things that can be found in larger cities--but that's an asset as well as a liability. There's a certain charm to small-town life, and Perry has that charm. You'd be surprised how often we see letters to the editor of the local newspaper from out-of-towners who had positive experiences here.

Racism is slow to die here, but it IS dying. And don't think that Tallahassee, just by virtue of being a bigger city, has completely shaken of its racist roots, either. Bigots are alive and well there just as they are in Perry.

And speaking of Tallahassee, the folks who live there seem to think they're something special. While Tallahassee does have some nice features, it's not all that as far as cities are concerned. The shopping is mediocre, there's a short supply of appealing and unique restaurants, the traffic is frequently terrible, and cultural experiences are limited.

As a whole, Taylor County's population is less-educated than many other areas of the state. There are exceptions to that, though (I hold an advanced degree, and happily live here). And being less-educated doesn't make someone an unpleasant person; there's a huge population of very kind, generous, "salt of the earth" people here. I'll take a friendly redneck over a surly, pompous urbanite any day of the week.

Now, small towns aren't for everyone. But if you like an environment where pretty much everyone knows pretty much everyone else and there's no shortage of people to help out when you need a hand, Perry's just what the doctor ordered.

Im not saying you cant find some good people in Perry, or that some people could enjoy living there.. But for the majority of people, you will be shaking your head in no time.

Actually Foley, AL is VERY different from Perry, FL.

Which one is "better" is a matter of personal opinion.

Strange that the OP's husband didn't even know which state his new job was in...

Perry is trash. Saying it is just a small town is white washing over the trash. Perry wishes it was just a small town.

You are lucky you are not going there, my suggestion was to not take the job.

Foley is an easy commute from Fairhope, which I find to be a really awesome small town, and you also get easy access to the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. Lots of well-educated UMC class folks in Baldwin County, Alabama because they're chasing better public schools for their kids than what you can get in Mobile proper.
