Hey my husband and I will be welcoming our first son this summer and we want to move to Florida. Currently, we live in North Carolina due to military but he is retiring within the next few months. He is a disabled vet, and he definitely wants an area that isn't so crowded and congested. We wish to own a good piece of land where I can own some farm animals (I don't need horses) and where we can install a pool. I would also like an area with a good school system for my son. My father is transferring job locations to Ft. Meyers, so if I could find a town within reasonable distance from that, it would be great as well. Thanks in advance!

Look at the Port Charlotte/Naples area - spent a few days down there for Spring Training games - kind of reminds me of old Florida. Can get a little touristy/snowbirdy in the winter months - but you might find land in the vicinity of that part of FLA.

You might post your question in individual forums in those locations (CDF forums).

You'll want to see what type of VA clinics are available to wherever you relocate to if his disability requires close monitoring/care. Up here in Tampa/StPete we have a couple of VA Hospitals and outpatient clinics - about a 90 min drive.

Thank you and your husband for service to your country.

Try North Port Estates in Sarasota county. It is zoned agriculturally, pretty inexpensive and close to the interstate for easy travel.

Thank you! We have been looking non-stop at homes online and we are in love with them! Thank you for the information on VA clinics, that's also a big factor on the location.

is accolade thanks to a very low cost of living, great amenities, sunny weather, and a stable housing market. A lower crime index and under performing schools stops Tampa from being higher on the list.

Naples?! Farm animals?!

Heh, probably better to look at Charlotte or inland counties in SW FL.

Lee County, east of I75 and north of the river are pretty rural areas. Also at Alva, Olga, and along SR 31.
