why the latter?
seems to me its the place to invest right now, in terms of rapid growth. Money magazine listed the area as one that will grow by some 74% between 2007 and 2011, if I'm not mistaken..

housing costs there are diiiirt cheap, right now...they can only go up, right?

Default Wait! There's more to this offer!!

It's not just the airport. They are going to run new highways from the Alabama border near Pensacola, al the way to Port St. Joe.

So, the Gulf coast will still be Atlanta's Beach, but maybe some Mid-Western folks could also bring their wallets.

"the Gulf coast will still be Atlanta's Beach" LOL!
That reminded me of an article that was in the AJC several years ago about where people come from that visit the "Emerald Coast"- if memory serves me correctly, 70+% came from the metro Atlanta area- The rest was- well minuscule.
Of course I have to admit- been going to Destin for over 15yrs.

IMO,

This is the best possible news for the area!

And, it's not just Atlanta's playground, visitors from all of the world vacation here and purchase vacation homes in Panama City.

Also, think about all the additional jobs, tourism and economic impact and growth this can have on an already popular vacation spot. If you haven't been here recently, there are many new commercial and residential projects popping up in the west and east bay areas.

And as someone said... Buy now, because the impact is already being felt and the current prices won't last forever. As more and more investors begin to open their wallets, fewer and fewer of the 'good' deals will be available.

Who ever said the housing is dirt cheap there must not be there. The median is still 230-250K! Currently the job sector doesn't support those kind of prices. And even though housing has slowed down along w/ construction people still are not dropping their prices. I'm betting their hedging their bets and holding out until the airport comes on line. Condo's on the beach are vacant at an alarming rate too but who knows...but if the airport brings in the $ they're predicting this area is going to blow up in an outrageous way!

Here is an update on the airport status:

New Airport Work Ahead of Schedule: Access Road Nears Completion, Will Allow Construction of Runway, Terminal

Posted on: Wednesday, 21 May 2008, 12:00 CDT
By Daniel Carson, The News Herald, Panama City, Fla.
May 21--WEST BAY Construction at the new Panama City-Bay County International Airport site is three months ahead of schedule, with a current focus on completion of the site's main access road, the airport's relocation project manager said Tuesday.
The Panama City-Bay County International Airport Authority held its regular meeting under a makeshift white tent Tuesday at the West Bay airport relocation site off County 388.
"Hopefully, in two years we'll have meetings here every month. But not in this tent," airport board Chairman Joe Tannehill joked as he started Tuesday's meeting. Tannehill said the airport board scheduled Tuesday's meeting at the active construction site because "we thought the public would like to see it." Amid the background noise of excavators transporting loads of dirt, the airport board heard an update from relocation project manager John Zebroski on new construction. Zebroski said that, even though construction started less than five months ago, site development milestones had been met well ahead of schedule.

Don't fall for all their hype, I live here. This area is so poor and backwards it is rediculous, it will be a good 20-30 years before it gets turned around. My first comment when I rolled in here was that it was like traveling back in time 20 years. How can anyone take this place seriously when they can't even clean up the one road that matters (front beach road) I have been here for 2 years and the same decrypet buildings that were falling apart on the side of the road when I came in are still here! and this is just the main road go forbid you go down any of the side streets you may witness some of the poorest areas of the country. If you are looking for quick cash here then keep walking because this is not the place, like I said it will be another 20-30 years before this place becomes what everyone wants it to be. Not to mention the people here are easily the ugliest in the country. I don't even remember the last time I saw a person who lived here who was truly beautiful.
