I also posted this under the Jacksonville forum, but I figure I need as much help as I can get!

A couple roommates and myself, all females in our early 20s, are looking at several areas in Florida to move to. We plan on making the trip south to check out different areas etc before the move, but advice now will definitely help!

Of course we love to drink and mingle like most young people but we also plan on spending most of our free time surfing (we're looking around Cocoa Beach area & St. Augustine area), so a bit of laid back chill "hippie" area would be great! All advice is highly appreciated!

Also, St. Augustine.. Cocoa.. Which would be better for our age/interests? Or any other area in Florida is very welcome also. We thankfully have the financial security and money saved to take our time looking around, work part time etc.

Look no further than Volusia County. Particularly Ormond Beach, which seems to have a good nightlife and lots of young people there. Just don't get caught up with the drug abusers or suspicious people.

Ormond Beach is not a "hippie" environment. ^^^ The average age is 48 there and the 18-24 age group has just 4.5% of the overall population, unlike St Augustine for example which has 18% in that age group.

The OP is looking for a surf community which either St Augustine Beach (Jacksonville Beach also) or Cocoa Beach would provide. Both areas have their advantages but in my opinion would focus on St Augustine Beach/Jacksonville Beach because you'll find more to do.

I'd explore anywhere from Jacksonville Beach on down to Sebastian Inlet. Looking at the 'space coast' section of craigslist there are quite a few homes for rent just a block or two from the beach down in that Satellite Beach / Indian Harbor Beach / Indiatlantic / Melbourne Beach area for reasonable prices.

There may be a bit of a trade-off in some of those areas though, plenty of surfers but I don't know how great the nightlife for a group of 20-somethings would be.

Best of luck where ever you end up.

Yep. That or St Augustine/Jax.

Either would be better than Ormond Beach LOL. I don't know where that other poster came up with that.

Thank you, thank you, thank you all! I've been to Cocoa beach several times, and loved it, but never looked at it from a residential aspect. Any specific areas of town to avoid/ areas that seem better geared to our interests?

Thats interesting. It sure seems a lot of young people are living there with how many locals on my fb are going to bars in Ormond.
