Question The Villages/Active Adult Communities

My husband and I are seriously considering relocating to The Villages. We visited earlier this year and liked what we saw. All the amenities/activities they offer for $125 per year are great, even though we feel the homes are somewhat over priced. We also know it's getting crowded there, at least in the winter months. We're concerned about insurance costs and I'm checking with an agent right now to get a good estimate of homeowners and auto insurance costs. All I ever seem to read are positive remarks for The Villages. Is it really that great or too good to be true? Would appreciate any insight offered. Thanks!

Cayce,
I have only heard wonderful things about The Villages. My husband's aunt and uncle are selling their condo on the ocean on Marco Island, FL to move to The Villages. I encourage you to go visit for yourself.
Laurie

There was a recent story about the statistically high rate of std's in The Villages, apparently due to an active social situation there. I don't recall details but I'm sure the local papers would have archives detailing it.

As I just turned 60, I personally find new optimism from learning about it - the future seems somehow brighter!

Good luck in your search for information.

Default my experience at the villages

My huband and I were recently in Ocala/Leesburg looking for homes, weare relocating from Southern California. Our realter took us to Leesburg and Lady Lake which is right next to the villages. I just thought it was such a nice place to be at. We are in our late twenties with one kid so we wouldnt be able to live there. We went to eat at Ruby Tuesdays and walked around. It was so fun watching all the seniors! They rule the place! They were all so friendly. When waiting to eat we looked at the restaruant and saw heads full of all gray hair! It was cool to see how active and full of life they were. My grandma is 75 and acts likes shes 100. Yes, she has arthritis all over her body but I wish she could be at a place like this. Eveyone had there little golf carts decked out. The men all had there ladies on there arms. too cute. We kept telling each other in 30 years this is where we will be, god willing!

But its funny someone mentioend the std's. Thats the first thing our Realtor told us about! She said it was on the news and they had to bring in educators to educate the community on safe sex! Hey, like I said... they are all full of life there!

I did visit Top of the World on accident. We saw nice homes and drove up there and the man wasnt too nice and informed us we couldnt look, we didnt know nor did he bother to tell us it was a 55 and over community. It looked very pretty but quite. It wasnt hopping like the Villages was!

Just my thoughts!

The Grand daughter was staying at the house. She invited the 3 guys and apparently let them in to the gated community. They were a nasty bunch I guess and it appears the grandparents put up a resistance to them being there and thats when it turned deadly.

It wasn't the granddaughter, it was their daughter and she knew these slugs and they came to her parents home to visit this daughter, they entered the home and shortly thereafter they made the mother sign over checks to them, the father was in the shower, he heard a shot and came running out of bathrm naked, of course, to see his wife lying on the floor and she told him "I am ok", then he heard another shot and she was gone...The daughter was then so called "kidnapped" by her buddies, so they say, and they found them via using the parents credit cards/atm transactions, the daughter has had years of problems i.e. drugs, alcohol etc. and her mom always tried to help her, in the end, she literally killed her own mother after all she had done for her daughter...Tragic... Also, the other big story in the Villages has been the Melinda Duckett story and her missing 2 year old.,Trenton..Melinda went to her grandparents home a couple wks ago and committed suicide in their home, she was 23...So, the Villages has been getting alot of publicity of late, but not positive...If you are interested in a 55 yr old community in Central Florida go to Solivita.com, gorgeous community...
