Daytona is the only place in Florida, in all my many trips down there, where my car was vandalized. The more i saw of it, the less I liked the place.

I'm no fan of daytona, but parts of Orlando Miami and Jacksonville are much worse than the seediest parts of Daytona. That was probably just a random act

Me and a bunch of friends went to Daytona in summer 1993 and summer 1999. Had no problems, had a good time getting drunk, laying on the beach, swimming, and going to the clubs and eateries. Met a bunch of people from Georgia and Florida, nice girls, and the guys were on the redneck side. Really we didn't know it was a trashy place. We just thought that's how beach towns were supposed to be... and we didn't really leave Atlantic Avenue at all. We thought the beach and water were great, much cleaner than Chicago, and that it was pretty cool we could have the car right there on the sand.

I lived in Florida in Spring 2005 and took a drive to Daytona during March (Spring Break month.) Couldn't believe that there were police cars lined up for blocks, and cops standing outside their vehicles basically looking angry and ready to pounce on someone. There were a lot of people there, college kids and drunk ones, but it really seemed like an aggressive police stance. It looked like a battle was about to erupt. And I guess that was normal procedure at the time.

That same month I also went in for a weekend and found the old hotel that I had stayed at in '93. The place looked a lot more run-down than I remembered it. It was kind of sad.
