My mom had one years ago, though it died from a cold snap we had in the early 80's - her old 20's home didn't have central a/c set up, only a fireplace & it wasn't working at the time. She always/still lovingly talks about that bird. Lots of pet birds get lost during storms & hurricanes - it's common...maybe, it's been out & wandering for over a year and got desperate?
You know, I was driving one day on a cooler day w/my window cracked open in 1994,on the palmetto expressway, and I heard a "ka-plunk...!" & a common blue parakeet (native to Aussie land) common in pet shops flew right into my car - maybe it was a post Hurricane Andrew pet. I rolled up the window & took it home/adopted it.
Last month there was another one in my backyard tree, just staring at me & doing a happy chirping sound - looked quite perky & healthy...tried to catch it but it flew away. Guess it's enjoying it's new found freedom...

It's been officially adopted. I think it's really neat that a Cockatiel and/or Parakeet can suddenly appear on land or at sea in Florida.

This is an excellent idea & it would be cute. Oh, I love stories like this...
Maybe something like Shells or Shelly...Sea biscuit, Salty,Stormy, Nemo, Flipper, Seaweed, Gully (for seagull), Piper, Sandy, Sea wings, Flighty, Conchy, Sharky, Sunny, Fishy, Gulfie...Beachy (too risque)? or Wilma/o or Katrina/o..??

he could also be named Capone since he has a knack of opening his cage door and escaping. he also likes to fly to and land on hair. I won't tell you what he does once he finds hair.

Uhh..oohhhh...
Well, guess he's making a little nest to ...???
Shall we say.."doing his business..??

Oh yeah...Al Capone would have been just dandy..I think good ole' Mobster Capone was a Florida resident, too. I think he died here, too during his last days.
As a matter of fact I think his home was just sold not to long ago...a family was living in it till recently and it didn't have central a/c or modern conveniences but they loved the home & bought it at an extremely good price a while ago, cause nobody wanted it. They didn't have the money to update it, but felt they could live in a grand old home at an affordable price. They even brought up their children there. It had beautiful architecture/bones and the inside was unique and nice. Anyhow, the new buyers have a ton of updating to do.
The story of the house is quite interesting as a neighbor that grew up next door remembers/has scary childhood memories of Capone's guys keeping vigil 24 hrs a day & he can still vividly remember when he'd come home from school the clicking sound of opening of little doors in the windows & of the guns - everytime someone would pass by or walk around the area. Poor kid...well, poor old guy, now...
