do Florida cockatiels fly out to sea? One landed on the boat about 10 miles out in the Gulf this morning.

Is it possible that this was someones pet that had gotten out? Did it seem really friendly? I have heard a lot of pet birds got loose during the storms last year.

I agree with myfask.
AFAIK, cockatiels are native to Australia and are pets everywhere else.
The URL below shows a site which illustrates the fact that unlike some parrot species which go wild, cockatiels don't do all that well loose in Florida.
Maybe they have a harder time finding other cockatiels? Dunno.

yes it's a warm and friendly Cockatiel. I am just amazed that it was flying around 10 miles out in the Gulf.

Yes, that is an impressive flight.
You aren't still out on your boat, are you? It would be nice if you could catch him and find him a new home.

I am so glad they have the bird.
it is sad to think that this poor bird was just wandering around looking for a new family.

we're still trying to figure out how that Cockatiel got 10 miles out into the Gulf of Mexico and landed on the boat this morning. She was on the back of the boat with her fishing rod when the Cockatiel flew by. The bird then did a u-turn and landed on the boat. They fed it crackers and the bird then took a long nap.

Ahh...a nappy....
Poor baby...it was probably exhausted, ohh..please adopt it. Sounds like it's lost & looking for a human family. When they are born into human families, it's very hard for them to make it out on their own. They are such sweet, sweet adorable birds.
My mom had one years ago, though it died from a cold snap we had in the early 80's - her old 20's home didn't have central a/c set up, only a fireplace & it wasn't working at the time. She always/still lovingly talks about that bird. Lots of pet birds get lost during storms & hurricanes - it's common...maybe, it's been out & wandering for over a year and got desperate?
You know, I was driving one day on a cooler day w/my window cracked open in 1994,on the palmetto expressway, and I heard a "ka-plunk...!" & a common blue parakeet (native to Aussie land) common in pet shops flew right into my car - maybe it was a post Hurricane Andrew pet. I rolled up the window & took it home/adopted it.
Last month there was another one in my backyard tree, just staring at me & doing a happy chirping sound - looked quite perky & healthy...tried to catch it but it flew away. Guess it's enjoying it's new found freedom...
