Call em what you like if you are going so fast or in such a hurry that stopping at a stop sign or stop light is going to be a major inconvenience then i can see where these cameras and all other road situations that slow you down are going to be an endless major irritant plaguing to your life, are all aspects of your life relegated to this need for speed attitude?
I've probably driven through thousands of speed and stop light cameras, many of which probably have a shortened orange,as yet they havent given me a ticket, those that have gotten tickets need to slow down if they want to avoid getting tickets..
I hate the fact that these red-light cameras exist.
I've gotten one in the mail about 3 months ago. Only one I've ever gotten. It's just not fair, because I remeber the day I got it in Coral Springs. The roads were wet. I was on University Drive, going about 40 mph, as that was the speed limit. Because I was going the speed limit, some jerk was tailgating me...prob about a foot away from my car....the light turned yellow and I made the decision to keep on going, because had I put on my break, it would have been a hard stop, on wet roads with some d-bag tailgating me...potentially causing an accident. As I went over the line it was still yellow, however turned red about half way through the intersection.
I got the red-light ticket.
It just bugs me because I used to my discretion, in what I thought was a potentially dangerous situation. It would have been far more dangerous to try and stop then to just go through the yellow light. Surely, between being tail-gated and the wet roads, the driver behind me would have hit me.
The camera flashed twice. I remember seeing it and thinking it was lightning lol. It was around 7:30ish pm so it was getting kind of dark. Anyway, my car and im sure his car got the ticket.
I'm being punished for doing the safe thing, avoiding an accident. ugggh, it just bugs me. I'm not a dangerous driver at all. I've got a spotless driving record and i do not believe a police officer would have pulled me over had he/she been at the intersection.
Red Light Camera's are here to stay......whether you like them or hate them......and eventually they will regulate them to the point where they are conforming state to state......
Before they had Red Light Camera's they formed what they call Traffic Enforcement Agents/Meter Maids......whose whole purpose was to go around and issue parking tickets......under the pretence that it would free up the police to concentrate on more serious matters......but in reality...it was an undiscovered form of revenue that eventually every municipality added in one way or another......
In many states they are...or have added...Speed Cameras......that can be set up almost any where...allegedly because speed kills......but it is really just another form of REVENUE......in NYC good old Bloomberg has applied for unlimited Red Light Cameras as well as Speed Cameras......he wants to start his enforcement program at 5 miles over the limit...now who does not drive 5 miles over the limit......eventually...you will not be able to drive through NYC - including the other 4 boros without mailing in several checks to cover the additional expense for visiting......what a deal....
Just a thought...but many of the new Radar Detectors have a Red Light Camera location notifiication built into them now...of course you have to pay a yearly fee to get updates...but I am sure over time...well worth it...In states like Virginia where Radar Detectors are illegal...you can buy a model that mounts under the hood of your vehicle that the police cannot detect...and then they had the license plate covers that distort your plate number at an angle that makes it impossible to take a photo...hense no summons...
The red lights cams aren't the only ones ripping people off. I had a job interview in Orlando and months later I get what appears to be a ticket in the mail from some Orlando toll company....says I didn't pay toll at an unmanned booth. BS, I payed every damn one of them and all it showed was a fuzzy black and white photo of the back of my car on a road, that's it, no angle view of a toll booth or anything. It was only $6.52 but the letter threatened license suspension if I didn't pay it. It was such a small amount so I paid , but thought what a nice little racket they have there...times that amount by even 20,000 or more people, a nice payoff for someone.
If you obey the laws of the road which protect you and those around you, then you have no worry about red light cameras.
You make an interesting point, but I still dislike the red light cameras even though I've never had a problem.
What is even more interesting is that people drive like morons and then cry when they receive a ticket because of it.
I'm willing to bet 99% of you do the same thing I did with regularity, yet everyone is suddenly a moral authority. Yeah, you all are perfect angels, never inched up to a traffic light, right? I doubt that. While what I did technically broke the rules, a rolling stop at a right turn red light isn't anywhere close to the same thing as running a red light by blowing straight through an intersection. The configuration of the intersection was such that you had to inch up anyways to see around the cars. Also, the light was yellow as I approached the turn and hit red the exact split second I crossed the line. It was really close like splitting hairs.
This whole thing just seems petty to me. It isn't right. Traffic cams are not legit or legal. A real police officer would not have pulled me over for that. Real police officers use something called discretion. Traffic cams have no discretion and are not legal or legitimate. Sorry, but you people are wrong. I have a feeling with so many willing to live in a surveillance society, in another 10 years it will be like 1984 or Minority Report where we will have thought police.
Not coming to a complete stop is a serious crime that causes a high amount of accidents each year, so the citation that you were given for your dangerous behavior is indeed correct. In addition to the citation you should also be banned from operating a motor vehicle on public roadways for a period of at least one year. Traffic school and public service should be mandatory as well.

No. Dangerous driving is no laughing matter and it is time we clear the roadways of these people. The cemeteries around the nation are filled with the dead bodies of people who were killed by people who did not have the time to come to a complete stop.
At least 50% of the people on the roadways right now are not qualified to be operating a motor vehicle on the public roadways because they consistently make poor decisions while driving, thankfully the other half of the population is skilled enough to avoid these foolish people.
Driving dangerously is equivalent to waving a loaded firearm in someones face, which is why people who decide to drive in a dangerous manner should be dealt with harshly by the authorities.
I agree a lot of people on the road are not qualified to operate a vehicle. I don't agree with your ridiculous suggestion that someone should lose their license for a year and be required to do community service for not coming to a complete stop. Those are punishments that people get with dui's.
