I am currently living in NY and want to move south. Does anyone know what the chances are of finding jobs for teachers who work with Autistic students?
Thanks!!!!
I am a 1:1 ESE Assistant for an autistic boy. I came here a year and a half ago. Last year there were major cuts in Collier County because of the budget shortfall. In this district all new hires are for one year only. This is because preference will be given to current staff whose jobs have been cut. We are anticipating more cuts this year too. The teacher in the classroom has 5 other special needs kids. Since I am 1:1 with a child with major behavior problems, I really cannot help her out, so she is basically alone.

The teacher lives in Lee County. They have a hiring freeze on there. I just read that Lee County is anticipating major cuts in staff very soon. I am betting that it will be the same in Collier again too.

It's not a very good time to get a job, period, especially working as a civil servant for the state of Florida.

I just wanted to give all the teachers that teach in this field a huge thumbs up. I never realized what you really have to deal with until I became friends with a someone in this field. My hat is off to all of you.

I am a teacher with 15 yrs experience in NY teaching Self contained (12:1:1), Resource Room, co-teaching, and now a reading specialist. I am getting tired of the taxes and nonsense in N.Y. What are the prospects of a decent salaried position as a teacher in the Tampa/St. Pete area?
I have a Masters in Special education, as well as a Masters in School District Administration. I am also a licensed 7-12 SS teacher.

Let me get this straight... you are looking to leave a secure, tenured teaching position with extraordinary benefits (including a defined pension plan) and hope to pursue something better in Florida ? This is because you are tired of the NY taxes and nonsense? Be appreciative for what you have. What you are seeking will never come close in today's economy to the job you are leaving. You will have thousands waiting for the chance that you seem to under appreciate.

I am a retired Special Education Teacher in TN. I could identify with the Teacher in TN having a large caseload. I taught Inclusion, (Learning Disabled) Gifted Students and Resource yearly. I have
my Masters Degree in Education/Special Ed. I just obtained my certificate for the State of Florida and have paper work in for Georgia. Concerning the reference to jobs in the area of Autism while I do not have an endorsement in Autism, but have taught 3 Autistic Students liked them and found they made good progress. Would I be able to seek a position in teaching Autistic Students in Georgia or Florida ? If so can you tell me where would be good places to look, either working in that area or with Learning Disabled Students. I prefer K-3rd Grade students and working in a Public School System. I would welcome your ideas and thank you so very much.
