Hey there,

So I've lived in the Tampa Bay area all of my life. Fairly soon, my girlfriend is going to be finishing a graduate degree in journalism and wants to start her reporting career at a small town paper somewhere in Florida. I've always like North Florida, the scenery and the slightly cooler weather and have wanted to live in a small town, at least for a little while. I bar-tend and have done construction so I feel like I could find a labor job anywhere, at the very least. We've looked into places like Defuniak Springs, Mayo, and Quincy. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Some more stipulations:

There has to be a nice downtown area with parks, with at least a restaurant or bar or two.

I wouldn't want to be to far (more than 60-90 miles) from a decent sized city (50,000 plus).

Has to have affordable housing with rentals on acreage.

Ideally, I'd want to be close a spring, beach or swimmable river or lake.

I know that a lot of N.FLA towns can be very clique-ish, it would have to be somewhere where it would be easy to make friends/social.

It could be in S. Georgia or S. Alabama too, we just want to be within a day's drive (6 or 7 hours) of St. Pete to visit family/friends.

Thanks!

Check out Woodbine, Georgia. It's a nice small town with friendly people, and near the beaches of Jekyll Island and Cumberland island National Seashore. It's an easy 45 minute drive south to Jacksonville.

Great suggestion! Never heard of Woodbine before but it looks like just what I'm looking for.

Alachua County offers multiple small, rural towns, all of which are within close distance to Gainesville, Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa.

Gotta go with the Georgia people here . . . Glynn County, or anywhere along the coast off of 295 is some of the most quiet and unspoiled "America" type real estate on the east coast.

Best wishes in your travels !
