i am looing for a quaint, artsy area of florida...with a walking downtown and shops (not box stores)a place with character, not pretense; something like the east village, NYC without the crowds, price, and snow...lol...

That kind of knocks out South Beach. The OP might find someplace like St Augustine, Gulfport or Delray Beach more of a match.

I'll second St. Augustine. Then there's Towles court in Sarasota. Or Rosemary Beach,Santa Rosa area in the Panhandle.

Dunedin. Not right on the beach, but has Honeymoon Island and Clearwater Beach very nearby.

Sarasota, St. Augustine, or New Smyrna. Maybe Flagler. Those really are your best bets. I'd look at those places first.
