Hoping someone more familiar with the area can help me narrow down my search...
I am looking for a great beach town on the west /gulf side of Florida somewhere between Tampa and Naples. I want it to have great beach access, be dog friendly, safe, not too touristy. I am looking to buy a house, not rent.

Are these areas only seniors or retirees? I am a young, single professional. Any sort of nightlife?

St Pete beach or Sarasota would be your best bets. The rest of the gulf coast is fairly old. Both areas I mentioned aren't terrible young either, but probably younger Than anywhere else on the gulf coast.

Tony is right - but I will add that the nice Gulf Coast beaches are all touristy. Everyone always wants the best place with best everything, and they they don't want the people that go with it. Sarasota and St. Pete are two of the nicest cities with best beaches on the Gulf Coast. Both will have tourists and its share of retirees. St. Pete is cheaper than Sarasota. Bradenton (north of Sarasota, south of St. Pete) has gorgeous beaches, (Anna Maria Island and its beaches) and may be a bit younger and cheaper than Sarasota, it really has a small town feel, but is crowded in season.

All are dog-friendly.

Thanks so much! What about Sanibel, Naples, Siesta key?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Indian Rocks Beach might be a good fit for you. Unlike surrounding beaches up and down the Gulf coast it doesn't have high rise development and as a result of the lower density a much less crowded feel. It appeals to the locals (not a ton of tourists) and has a significant beach bar presence (along with a nice selection of quality restaurants) which in my opinion gives it a bit of a Key West-vibe.
