This is what most people know but won't say. Among New Yorkers, for instance, one in five seniors age 65 and older was disabled when moving to Florida. But almost half were disabled when moving back to New York. Florida has a reverse migration and with the loss of people service job will be loss also.

I came down here from NY 3 months ago. I do not know ONE SINGLE PERSON who retired and moved to Florida. If they aren't staying put in the homes they bought back in the 70s, they are retiring to the Carolinas, Pa., and the SouthWest. It is NOT CHEAP in Florida anymore. Sun and beaches is not worth it. They are finding other places. Accept that fact.

Its true people are not moving here like in the 70's 80's and 90's. I have been here all my life and never seen this. Now we have a lack of jobs also.

Never known anyone who wants to retire here. Most people I know prefer to stay near family & friends. Home is paid off. Move here for what? Tennis?

Default I'm out!!!

We moved here from south GA in 2004, for a better life. HA! What a joke. We are moving out next summer, to north GA. More opportunity, more affordable housing, better paying jobs in my field, cheaper HO insurance, cheaper property taxes. Sure, there is income tax, but the cost of living is a bit better.

And we have family and some friends there, we have no family here in central FL.

I will miss the beach, though. But I can visit :-)

I could see this coming.

Not only would the housing prices not be sustained, due to the job market, but Fort Myers is notorious for penny-pinching retirees. After Charley, and the market had a huge run-up, I knew that the snow birds would pull out as soon as they got their insurance and tax bills.

I would be interested to see how many try to sell this "season."

I think realtors are foaming at the mouth hoping that they will come down this season, be blinded by the sun & foul smelling beaches, & fall head over heels for a home that is now $25-$50k less than it was last year when they were here.

I hope these people have been keeping up with the RE market of SWFL.

Just chatted with snowbirds who were out cleaning up their crab grass & sun worn mulch. They left in April & the home was on the market. Home never had a showing. Reducing asking price by $50k. They just want it off their hands.

me personally, dont care if retired ny'ers are moving back to ny. in fact, that is probably fine with many of us. is this supposed to be negative news for us floridians? b/c it's not. i'm sure many others feel the same way.

Most people I've met over the years had a second house in Florida. As far as I know, all of them have sold their houses in the past few years to make a profit when real estate went up.
