Default Lake Placid

Ok, I am going to Florida this winter. I've been to Florida a bunch in the past but never to this general location.

Just your typical invader Yankee coming down to rape and pillage the land.

Well not really, one of my relatives who lives in Florida year round bought a "Summer Place" in Lake Placid, they aren't there on a daily basis. So they asked if I would come down and house set in the winter.

So why not. I did a little research on the town. I found there is a library, does anyone know much about it??? Lots of computers, I hope. Going to need that.

What's to do for fun??? Ok, I know Disney World is an easy trip. Got to try Space Mountain one more time before I die.

What about shopping and the general services one could need. Is all that available local or do you have to travel to where-ever???

I got no risk, am looking forward to the trip. Maybe it will become an annual thing. Bringing huge dollars and cheer to the local community. Plus my dog will come too so the if you see the mutt total blip up a bit in the statistics that will be why.

Do they typically have fresh fruit in those winter months????

What should I expect for the weather in the months of December - March.

Just your typical carpetbagger with the out of state plates that looks lost. You will know I am not a native senior citizen because will be driving far too fast and the turn signal will not be on for miles and miles.

It's funny you mention the library. The last time I was there I stopped to ask for some directions and there was a hand written sign on the door "Be back soon" I sat around and waited a few minutes and sure enough the lady showed up and opened the door. She said she had to run a few errands. This kind of informality is one of the real charms of the small town you have no sense of in the city.

My big problem with that area is I guess due to the lakes, well I will just tell you a story. My wife and I were sitting in the grass enjoying the evening before driving home and like someone turned on a switch at that magic time of the day so many bugs came out we had to make a run for the car. That is just part of living there though, even Naples with it's million dollar homes when they get that breeze off the glades can be very bad at times.

Not So Lost is on a distinguished road
We live in Sebring only a few miles outside of Lake Placid. It is truly a charming little town known for its murals (all over, they are great) and that they are the Caladium capital of the world. The library has several computers; there is plenty of golf; boating; and fishing. Lots of small shops and mom and pop resteraunts. For the big name resteraunts and stores (Walmart; JcPenny; etc...) you will need to go into Sebring. there is a Gator farm south of L.P. that is open to the public; a charming Country Winery (Henscratch Farms) that will have fresh Strawberries in December and they make their own wine. Lots of cute and quaint things to see and do. The area is growing by leaps and bounds so I am sure there will be more to come. We are selling our place and heading to Tennessee. Everything is growing up around here now.

Thumbs up Lucky You!!!

As in another post, I mentioned I have just returned from Sebring, and have been so depressed since I arrived back in KY. I think anytime you can enjoy weather in the 70's and 80's in the winter, with sunny skies - it is a definite plus.

I was born and raised in KY, spending a short time in FL when I was small. My grandparents owned a home in Venice, but returned here because of family.

I am doing all I can to encourage my family to head south. It makes no sense to be cold for 6 months plus when just miles down the road is everything you could imagine and warmth too!

My father is crazy about Lake Placid - they did not settle there only because what they were looking for wasn't available at the time. They go regularly to the Winery, and the Caladium Festival (their yard is full of them), and he describes it as a wonderful, charming city.

I am looking at houses there now myself, but have no idea how soon I will be able to go.

One thing to remember about that area - it is all about relaxation in the winter. The "SnowBirds" come in from November til around April, and it does get crowded, but they are alot of fun, people are nice, friendly, and you never meet a stranger.

There will be PLENTY for you to do there - and take your bicycle if you have one - you won't regret it. You can also rent one if you like - so much more can be seen this way!

Enjoy!
