Don't have money or a job down here?? Sounds like a really really bad plan.

Perhaps he's retiring and has thought it through?

I would focus around SW Florida, from Bradenton down to Port Charlotte and further on down to Fort Myers and Cape Coral. There are a good number of one bedroom condominiums in the 10K-20K. Some are foreclosures and some are not, and some are communities where one has to be 55 or over. Check out websites like Trulia to look further.

If he thought it through don't you think he would have at least be able to tell us what type of place or a certain region of the state. I think when someone gives condo-tralier park range and the only reason he gives is because he wants it to be warm and get away is not someone thinking it through.

Florida is a really demographically diverse state with at least five large, unique population centers: Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, ... and another 6-8 additional markets: Melbourne, Ft. Myers, West Palm, Key West, Daytona, Pensacola, Sarasota, etc.

What you are seeking economically, socially, lifestyle-wise is here along, of course, with sunshine, beaches, palm trees, fishing, golf and all the other stuff you might be interested in .... is here.

Rather than look at dozens of potential locations, why not develop a prioritized (weighted) checklist of your specific interests and start weighing-out the possibilities city-by-city. Affordable Real Estate will present itself in each market, as you narrow down your areas of interest. (Almost every area of Florida is also oddly and equally diverse, in terms of zoning). But, why settle only for an affordable dwelling, without first identifying where you want it located?

I thought most people on here would tell the OP in that situation not to worry, that even people with no skills could move down and work 2-3 minimum wage, part-time jobs at McDonalds to get by?

At least, every time I post something similar to what I quoted, I'm told that I'm being hateful or negative about the state.

Tennessee & Texas would provide a better, more affordable retirement.

However, if you're deadset on Florida, look at the northern parts of the state as they are generally more affordable.
