Default Kids from England gone to FSU - need to understand car insurance please.

Our 2 children have recently gone to FSU in tallahassee. We are looking to buy them a car but need to understand how car insurance works over there (we live in England). Eldest doesn't drink and so is usually the designated driver, but driving someone elses car. What will happen if they have an accident as they currently have no car insurance of their own. When we do get them the car and insure it - what do we need to have covered?

Are you sure they really even need a car?

Our kid is there, as well, but decided to leave his car home, parking at FSU is terrible and he just takes the bus or walks to where he needs to go.
He does have a good friend with a car, though.

Right now, Florida is a bit of a mess with car insurance.

If the driver has a valid license and is driving with the permission of the owner, he will be covered by the owners insurance. In the event of an accident, if the insurance is not high enough to cover the claim, both the owner and the driver will be liable.

If you get a car, you need liability coverage and uninsured motorist coverage. UM covers you in the event the person causing the accident has no insurance or very little insurance. UM steps into the shoes of the other driver.

You should have liability limits of at least $100,000 and UM of at least $100,000. Anything less is foolish. Also, you would want medpay , to cover medical payments not covered by your medical insurance. Finally, if it is a fairly new car, you would want collision coverage, to repair damage to your car, and comprehensive coverage, to cover everything else, like wind damge or things falling on your car, or theft.
