Destin will have prettier beaches than the red sand of New Smyrna - Flagler Beach.

It also depends on your other preferences .. do you wish to be near a major city or airport, for example. If you're a military retiree, there is a large presence in the Destin/Pensacola area. Gulf coast vs. Atlantic. Golf vs. outdoor vs. other activities. There are advantages and disadvantages to each area of the state.

If you are willing to spend up to a million, you can get some nice places as well : zillow.com/homedetails/19907-Front-Beach-Rd-Panama-City-Beach-FL-32413/42805103_zpid

I would love to be in the naples or miami area, but something tells me that there wont be any areas that you can get a beachfront home for under 1m near there.

I am retired and can really move anywhere, not too hung up on needing any one thing (besides the beachfront part of course)
Palm Island, Little Gasparilla.

This is why forums are useful. On paper the specific city of Jacksonville has a larger population than Orlando, but it's metro population is smaller. Orlando receives 40+ million tourist. It's misleading to say Orlando is 1/4 the size of Jacksonville. It's not reality of daily life.

Greater Orlando metropolitan population 2,134,411

Metro Jacksonville population 1,345,596.

The Jacksonville metropolitan area is the 40th largest in the country and the fourth largest in the state of Florida, behind the Miami, Tampa, and Orlando metropolitan areas.

I agree, the forums are useful in that they also put into context the reality of certain things as well. Orlando reads like a big metropolitan area but in actuality isn't and ranks larger than MSAs/cities like Cincinnati, Cleveland, Austin and nearly as much as Pittsburgh. Anyone who has traveled and/or lived elsewhere can understand the difference in the MSA rankings and how misleading they can be.
