Florida has a stereotype for being all old people, but having been numerous times (although have only been once in the last 11 years), never noticed that many.

Anyway, what cities/areas would you say have more young people? Places up and coming, like say Raleigh or Austin (not city wise whatsoever, but youth wise)?

What areas are generally the "retirement" areas young people would rather avoid?

Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa/St. Pete

You also got college towns such as Gainesville and Tallahassee, but they are just temporarily young.

I'd probably include Jax, and, to a smaller degree, some of the medium-sized towns like Melbourne, Sarasota and Daytona Beach.

Agree about the college towns. They are mostly skewed towards undergrads, so if you are later 20s/early 30s, It can be pretty sparse.

It sounds like you're more interested in the main working sector (age 25-44) and places with more singles, so in that instance according to census numbers Tampa would probably be the best choice, followed by Jacksonville which is kind of up and coming overall. Here's the numbers of the major cities in the state:

Tampa/Hillsborough County - 27% single individual households, 32% age 25 to 44, avg age of 35
Jacksonville/Duval County - 26% single individual households, 33% age 25 to 44, avg age of 34
Orlando/Orange County - 24% single individual households, 33% age 25 to 44, average age of 33
Fort Lauderdale/Broward County - 30% single households, 31% age 25 to 44, avg age 38
Miami/Dade County - 23% single households, 31% age 25 to 44, avg age 36

Bear in mind to confuse you further, Ft Lauderdale and Miami proper (versus county) would skew much younger and have more of a single "professional" community (versus service economy) than Tampa, Orlando or Jacksonville.

Fort Lauderdale/Miami Area
Orlando/Daytona Beach Area
Tampa/St. Petersburg Area

Jacksonville, Tallahassee and Gainesville are more of the temporary young kind, as another poster said.
