Your daughter must be in some area of TN that the rest of us don't know about, where it just rains and rains most of the time. We have a drought problem here in TN, way behind on rainfall for the year. It is currently 72 degrees where I'm at right now, I'm in shorts and T-shirt believe it or not. We had a couple nights with temps in the 40's, but the days are nice.
Rains may be 'a start' for ending drought - Nashville, Tennessee - Tuesday, 10/23/07 - Tennessean.com

To get back to the original question...

It usually takes a couple of winters to get used to it. Like the summers here.
The smartest thing to do is layer your clothing and keep your head covered.
One of the differences is, for the most part it cools down gradually in the north(unlike here where it can be 80 one day and high of 50 the next). So by the time Jan and Feb get here it's not as bad.
If you go from here to the north just to visit, sure it feels colder.
Now there is a difference in dry cold and wet cold just like there is a difference in wet heat(humidity) and dry heat. I'll take dry heat and cold any day.

I suppose people called me some names when I lived in FL too...LOL . I lived 23 years in FL, I would probaly still be there if taxes and insurance hadn't got out of hand.
We had 4 rental properties and the taxes and insurance were killing us,I also had a trucking company. We decided to sell everything and get out, so we loaded up our truck and we moved back to TN. (Beverly Hillbillies...lol) we enjoyed living living in FL up until the last couple of years, moved back to TN in June 2006.

I moved from the north to Florida and it took me a while to get used to the long, hot, terribly humid summers. Your body does adjust eventually, that is if your mind will let it. Some people just have the mentality of "I hate cold" or "I hate heat" and the mental block doesn't help them any. Mind you I am now back in the north and I am still not a fan of Florida summers but I know I can tolerate them if need be.

I know what you mean...We can barely survive here anymore. I work for the state and so does my hubby we have had very little in the way of raises and are thinking about moving once I graduate UF. We have tossed around TN (Knoxville area). I am in love with the PNW but things out there are more costly than even here!
I know the cold will take some getting use to anywhere I go, I am a true Florida Native but I just can't take the Florida lifestyle anymore. I want to work for more than gas, groceries, taxes & Homeowners INS.....
Oh but I am a Gator....will Knoxville still have me?????

The best weather I have ever encountered is in San Diego, CA. Beautiful there. My ideal would be Memorial Day until January 2nd in MA/New Hampshire and January to May in Florida

I traveled a great deal in the PNW in the trucking business, some very beautiful country. They do have some harsh winters there, snow, snow and more snow..lol.
I know what you are saying about the FL lifestyle, we have friends still down there trying to sell their homes and get out.... some are just a step away from foreclosure. If you are looking at Knoxville the winter temps get a little lower there than where I live. I'm 130 miles West of knoxville and 65 miles south east of Nashville, the winters here are mild.
In knoxville you would be in the heart of "Big Orange Country" Vols..lol, but I think you would still be OK being a Gator..lol. People around here are surprised I'm not a Vols fan, I'm a big FSU fan (ducking head lol). Have you checked out the Murfreesboro or Cookeville areas? Both are college towns also, the winters here in middle TN are mild. We do have a lot of Gator fans in TN so I don't think you would have a problem.
