While it's not a bad wage for an unskilled entry level job it is still what I would consider low wage.

It's very good for unskilled work. Most studies these days define "low wage" as <$12/hour

Hundreds of low-wage workers go on strike in D.C.

Might work in a low COL area, but won't bring many out of poverty in South Florida unless they live in Belle Glade.

If you live in Belle Glade you wouldn't want to make a commute into PBC.

That's not the point of entry-level jobs. You could afford a studio apartment and a cheap used car on what Amazon is paying. Money would be tight and you'd have little reserve for emergencies, but I wouldn't call it poverty. I wouldn't expect you to stay at the bottom for more than 2-3 years, presuming you have a modicum of work ethic.

The best thing you could do would be to live with someone else. That's a big improvement in household economic efficiency for both parties.

south FL is a special case.... highest COL in the state. Honestly, if you really want to make good money and you have NO marketable skills or education, FL, CA, etc aren't the places to be.

You have to make the trek up to places like ND

Yet people do it, plenty work for US Sugar out in Clewiston and drive from here to there and vice versa for the jobs.

$13/hr in South Florida is poverty, sorry...1 bedroom apartment in a nice area is easily pushing $1K month here, you would have to resort to a high crime or shady area. Palm Beach County is trying to lure an Amazon Fulfillment Center, if it went in it would probably be in North County near the Walgreens Distribution Center....you won't be renting a nice apartment in Palm Beach Gardens...more so Riviera Beach east of Congress more like it....

Figuring roughly $1600/month net after taxes at those wages, not even including deductions for health care. Let's say you get $1400 after that, after paying the rent..that leaves you $400/month leftover for groceries, car insurance, utilities, gas and car payments...of course I left out plenty of expenses.

Was a good salary in 1990 maybe or in places that have a lower COL... or good for a kid living with Mom and Dad...that's common here where you see kids in their 20's and 30's still living at home.

Obviously it's too cold for those types of people, problem is I have met and know a lot of people that live here that have the education, cannot say on skills for most since I do not know them that good..but plenty are such..they just cannot find work or if they do the job doesn't pay a competitive wage to other parts of the US...even probably worse than North Dakota.
