Talking Welcome back!

Can't help you with the jobs cause I don't know what you want/know...But a safe bet would always be hospitality!

Hey James, I hear that construction is slowing down a lot in S Fla. I have a friend in Fort Meyers, her husband was in construction and everything slowed down so bad that he had to take a county job, and they don't pay to well. Check out the area carefully before you make the jump. Good luck.

I have to disagree about county jobs!!! Anyone I know including myself would LOVE a county job!!!
You get a pension, you don't pay for insurance, you're pretty much set! Once you're "in", you pretty much can't/don't get fired. (Which isn't always a good thing for someone on the other side... )
The pay isn't "high", but it's certainly good to have a county job! I used to work for the county - but we didn't "mix"...It's kind of like being in the army! I like a more relaxed atmosphere! But for someone who can handle it, it's a good move...

Hi elfyum, I'm just comparing county jobs to construction jobs in the state of FL. Yes, you are right about county jobs having the benefits, but in the county I live in the pay is really low, like 7 dollars an hour low. It's fine if you can stick it out and work your way up the pay scale, but you may be suffering while you get there. Construction jobs pay better but don't have the benefits. Hence my advice to James about thoroughly checking the situation out first.

One of the jobs in demand is a corrections officer esp in Central FL. That's state pay and benefits. Once you're hired at a prison, they pay for your certification class which takes about 6 to 8 weeks. There are not alot of jobs down here that pay well.......we have a neighbor who moved here from Minnesota where he was making over 15 to 20 bucks an hour construction. Here.....he can find only 7 to 9/hour jobs. Corrections pays apx 32,000/yr starting. My husband has 2-1/2 more years in and then he's vested in retirement and we're outta here.

I think elfyum said hospitality (as in the hotel industry), not hospitals.

Other jobs in demand in FL: anything in the medical field. X-ray techs, nursing, assorted therapists, good pay and high demand.
