Default florida .Sorry, New York Isn't Crime Capital of U.S.

I would like to know on what Roger Stone bases his insinuations that New York is the crime capital of the United States in "The Mario Myth" (Op-Ed, Nov. 6). Certainly, it cannot be on statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
In recent F.B.I. statistics for murder, certainly the most heinous of crimes, New York has by no means the worst rate in the country. It is not even in the top 10. The worst murder rate is in the District of Columbia, and has been so for several years. Other cities in the top 10 include Detroit, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta and Houston. New York, the last time I checked, was 11th on the national murder list.
Even more significant, while two of the cities, Washington and Detroit, are in jurisdictions that do not have the death penalty, Miami, Dallas and Atlanta, the cities that round out the top five, are in jurisdictions that not only have the death penalty, but also employ it regularly.
Of course, New York has its shortcomings. But in the land of opportunity, it is still the city of opportunity, as evidenced by the thousands of immigrants from other countries who come here, as well as those who come here from other states because they realize they have a better chance to make it here than they did in the places they came from.
Eager to discredit Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, Mr. Stone, a Nixon-Reagan-Bush campaign consultant, has denigrated New York. But if he is going to criticize our city and state, let him base it on the facts and not on his prejudices. JOSEPH A. LEVY Forest Hills, Queens, Nov. 7, 1991

Dadecounty, a serious question: What, exactly, is your point?

FIRST of all, that article you have cited from is dated 1991!! Although I have no idea what New York's present crime stats are, it's pretty safe to say that New York City has gotten a LOT better in the years since, and so much nicer and more prosperous because crime has been cleaned up.

Secondly, I hope you're not trying to glamorize crime in the state and Dade County in general. If I'm ever bored enough I head over to youtube and try to google local city names. You'd be amazed, when viewing "ghetto fights" or any sort of crime related video in Florida, how fast the cyber thuglets come out of the woodwork to brag about how much "harder" and how much more crime, murders, etc. THEIR crap hole neighborhood has over some other crap hole neighborhood in the state. Usually by area code or county.

Jacksonville, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Broward, Miami seem to be where the main culprits of such "pride in filth" comes from. I SERIOUSLY hope that isn't your goal here, as it's nothing to be proud of at all. If anything, it's shameful to the other 6 billion people on this earth.

But if you're not trying to glorify crime, and are just providing a public service or something, then sorry. I hope you'll agree with me nonetheless that it is disgraceful, and not a source of pride, to have so much criminality in a given area.
