My mortgage lender required us to have windstorm protection, they didn't give us an option. Flood was optional though as we are 22 ft above sea level.

Remember, if you have a mortgage, it is the mortgage company who really owns your house so they will make some of those decisions for you.

The real problem is knowing where the wind zones are. In Florida, one house could cost $10,000 in windstorm insurance alone and the house across the street could be $3,000. It all depends on where the insurance company draws the line.

well what i'm asking myself is why would anybody not have homeowner's insurance even if the house is paid off? To the vast majority of people their home is their biggest asset so why wouldn't you insure? Makes no sense not to have homeowner's insurance.
