There is a lot to do if you like to fish(the fishing is like no other there!!!), snorkel, snuba(something new), scuba dive, para sail, or just hang out outside by the water, the beautiful sunsets, glass bottom boats, off shore grand prix boat races, duval street, and more.... Which is what we all love. I have researched the schools, I have looked into things for my child, such as they do have a Boys and Girls Club which my son loves to go to after school and for the summer. They have a seacamp for kids ranging from 7 to 17. It teaches them a lot. My son loves to play football and we did find out that they have football teams for kids there.
We are tired of living life in the fast lane with all the city and crap that goes on. Yes the cost of living may be more but, that is total relaxation to be able to go to work and come home to paradise all around you. The peace and serenity of the tropics. Life is not about malls and CVS pharmacies on every corner with Walgreen's down the street. It's not about just going to work and coming home to cook dinner. It's about doing the things you love to do. Yes my husband and I will go to work and my son to school. But, everyday I come home and the water is at arms length and the tropical plants and such are everywhere I am enjoying my life and knowing I can do something I love that won't take a airplane to get there or a long road trip.....
Sounds like your going to get your dream come true..congrats on your move. What part of the Keys are you moving to? Let us know.

I love the upper Keys...Key Largo , Islamorada and love to do alot of the water activities you mentioned. But I wouldn't want to move there personally with my family. It's ok to visit and I could probably stand it for about 6 months straight until the "key's disease" wore off alittle.

Like the original posters question about moving to Key West. OMG no especially with a family. Talk about feeling trapped ,especially if you don't take in some of the outdoor activities. Plus Key West (IMO) wouldn't be a good place to raise a family.

I think Key West is a much better place to raise kids except maybe the Upper Keys (Key Largo/Tavernier area). The Lower and Middle Keys are quite boring and have very little for kids to do - everything is so far away! Key West has a strong community, lots of families, sports leagues, schools, stores, restaurants, movies, skate rink, pretty much everything that families would want. Not all of Key West is drinking and drug use; that lifestyle only pertains to a minority of people who live there. Myself and many others who attended Keys schools got a good education there, so that really is a non-issue. My mom has been a teacher for many years and has been teaching in the Keys for the last 11 years; she thinks the schools there are great. If I had a family and had to live in the Lower or Middle Keys, I would most certainly live IN Key West so that I wouldn't have to commute into Key West for school, work, activities. Most of the city is quite suburban and in looks quite similar to suburban Miami in appearance (strip malls, single levels homes in dense neighborhoods, tropical vegetation, etc.); it is only the Duval Street area where most of the drinking and partying goes on. People have a hard time believing that normal people live down there, but if you move there you'll be pleasantly surprised to find out that you'll meet a variety of people from all walks of life.
