University of Florida....
Hey, I'm a high school junior and UF is one of my top choices for college right now. I am wondering about how hard it is to get in to UF.... I know that it's hard, but I'm looking for more specific info, what you think my chances are, and where my strong/weak points are.
Here is where I stand now:
- I have a 1200 on the SAT (I've taken it once so far).
- I have over a 4.0 GPA (not sure exactly what it is).
- I play varisity basketball and have run two years of varsity cross country.
- I have served as Treasurer, President, and I'm currently serving as the VP for SGA.
- By next winter, the semester before I graduate high school, I should have my A.A. degree in history from Pensacola Junior College because of all the dual enrollment courses I am and will be taking (I have a 3.7 GPA in my classes there right now).
- I have lots of cummuinity service hours.
- I'm homeschooled, but most of my classes are dual enrollment classes.
- And I'm a middle-class white male.... so I guess I'm not winning any diversity points
So anyway, those are the basics.... I would really appreciate any info/advice especailly if you are going there or have been there. Thanks in advance!

I think you have a very good shot at admission but take that SAT again.
It's become so competitive to be a GATOR it's insane. But it's definitely the BEST school in the state and is well worth another saturday morning testing. You seem very well rounded- good luck!

Thanks for the reply
Yeah, I will take the SAT again for sure. I was pretty happy with it since I didn't expect it to be that high and it was my first time, but it's still only ok in terms of admission to UF. I will robably take the ACT as well at some point.

You sound like a very motivated young man. I hope that it works out for you at UF.
Have you taken any AP classes? The reason why I say this is that AP classes are preferred over dual enrollment. I recently got an email from my son's high school counselor that summed up a talk given by the Dean Of Admissions for TCU (in Texas) and this is what was said about AP and dual enrollment:
>> A rigorous schedule during the senior year is always a plus, particularly when applying to highly competitive universities. Dual credit classes are generally less desirable than a comparable AP class, and can actually hurt a student applying to a high-end college.<<
Your athletics, being a treasurer and community service hours will round you out nicely on paper. Taking the ACT and SAT again would be helpful as well. Good luck to you!

I am not sure, but I think you have to have a 1400 on your SATs for UF. I have looked into it as a transfer student from another college and that's the information I found. HTH

Well,
I can give you two instances.
1. My daughter got in 4 years ago: AP+ for 5 years; 4.3 GPA; 1375 SAT; 5 years foreign language; Cheerleader; she is very good at writing and had an excellant essay.
2. Friends son last year did not get in. Some dual enrollment classes; a few AP+classes; 4.0 GPA; 1420 SAT; Math and science wiz; Varsity Basketball
The difference: Its getting much harder each year and my daughter went for early admission where you commit to the university if they accept you early. ALSO, she went for an interview in the early fall of her senior year with a Florida admissions person.
If you really want to go there-pull out all the stops-you will be competeing with the best in the state.
Best of luck to you!

My son graduated high school in 2006. Many of his friends had very high GPA's, high SAT's, etc. Some got in to UF some did not, same with FSU.
I think there is no rhyme or reason for admissions and the standards are getting higher and higher with each passing year.
You sound very well-rounded and mature, good luck to you!
