Since there is a similar thread going on, I thought I'd start a "how much do you make?" thread, where you can include your income, or income range, and what field you are in.

Totally up to you guys if you want to share... I think the pay in FL is not "that bad" and think that aside from probably Charlotte and Raleigh, FL pays just as much as any other areas in the South.

So I'll go first...

I work in real estate development, since I've been out of the industry for a few years, I took an entry-level (sort of) position out in the field and make in the $70-75k range.

However as much as some might hope, anecdotal examples don't override actual statistics which read as follows:

Metro Orlando's median pay ranks last among the nation's 50 biggest metropolitan areas, and it has the largest share of jobs — 37 percent — paying less than $25,000 a year. That's nearly twice the rate of Las Vegas, another city built on tourism.

Central Florida also has the smallest share of jobs paying more than $50,000. And since 2002, median pay in the region, adjusted for inflation, has fallen by $1,761 — to $29,450 — as the number of middle-class and upper middle-class jobs tumbled because of the Great Recession.

Low median pay isn't a new phenomenon: In 2002 and 2007, before the recession hit, Orlando ranked 49th (ahead of San Antonio, Texas) among the top 50 metro areas.

***Metropolitan statistical areas ranked by median household income***
Overall Rank-MSA-Population-Median Household Income
52 West Palm Beach–Boca Raton, Florida MSA 1,131,184 $45,062
82 Jacksonville, Florida MSA 1,100,491 $42,439
87 Orlando, Florida MSA 1,644,561 $41,871
132 Miami–Fort Lauderdale, Florida CMSA 3,876,380 $38,632
156 Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater, Florida MSA 2,395,997 $37,406

OK. So 63 percent of the jobs pay more than 25k a year. Median means 1/2 pay that much or less and 1/2 pay that much or more. What is your point?

But I think that a lot of the server/retail jobs that teenagers and students have, are a large portion of the jobs and therefore skew the numbers lower. If you have a 35 yr old attorney making $125k and 2 UCF students working for $18k a yr each, if the sample size were just 3, it would skew the numbers BIG time. I know the sample size will be much larger than just 3, but I'm just wondering if the large number of students and young people skews the median income down. What would the median income be of Orlando-area adults between the ages of 25 and 65? Probably a bit higher than $29,450.

There are plenty of websites with average salary information for various industries and localities. I am in higher education and in the $60-70k range. I am in the Miami area. (future postings should include which part of FL you are in).

I'm in Hollywood, FL and work in higher education. My salary is $52k a year.

While I'm thankful for my employment, I'd love to make in the $75k range, but I'm finding it difficult finding those types of jobs in southern broward county.
