I think Publix is a terrific supermarket, but I have never seen a store that compares to the http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f60/MurphChessLinus/smileynotworthy.gif (broken link)Wegmans we visited in State College, PA this summer. I thought I was in foodie heaven.

I was so excited to have found it, my DH was looking at me like I had lost it. Well, by the time we went through that store he was hooked. We visited Wegmans three times in the span of 4 days!

Thanks everybody for posting comments.I have to believe Wegmans did the demographics for Florida and decided for whatever reason it was not viable. However, have you ever been in any grocery store like it that is remotely comparable? They are a family run business that treats their people well.Maybe there is just to many logistic supply problems that prevent this from coming to fruition.I still hold out HOPE! Spiedies forever!

Default why wegman's is not in FLA.

Ok, I am a BIG Wegman's fan. I did write to them a couple of years ago. The official response is they would have to build a warehouse in order to expand to Fla. That may happen, who knows? Publix great? Comon! no way, even shoprite can beat Publix.
ANd no it is not the water or humidty that effects bread. If you notice most of the bread is soft crusted like cuban bread. That is the poplular bread. That is what they know how to make here...

I'm still amazed at why people get so excited over bread that is like biting into tree bark.

Some enjoy fettuccine bolognese. Some prefer spaghetti-os . Mystery of life.

We spent two days just walking and staring at everything. Sometimes, you just do not have a week to marinate spiedies properly, and want to eat them that night.Well, they had them ready to go,and that woke me up to just how much we are behind the times here in Florida grocery wise. WEGMANS YOU RULE!
On behalf of all Floridians, I apologize that your obscure regional dish that nobody has heard of (spiedies) isn't readily available here.

If I ever move to the northeast, I promise that I will complain that there isn't a Publix because I don't always have time to cook my own mojo roast pork.

The moral of the story is: each part of the country has different cuisine. Embrace it! Find a new favorite! We have excellent Cuban food here. Texas has beef BBQ. Southern California has carne asada. The upper Midwest has pasties. NYC has Italian food. That's part of what makes each place excitingly unique.

If I ever find myself in south central NY (I'll admit it - I had to google where Binghampton is because I'd never heard of it), I'll be sure to try spiedies. I'm sure they're also excellent.

I'm with you - . And for the record, there are actually people in many other states who are pining for a PUBLIX! I got some dang good Publix stores to shop at with fabulous breads (yes, even Cuban) so I got no complaints!

Well, if you're saying that great bread has the ability to hit a baseball 400 ft, then I guess I'm just going to choose the sub-standard softer varieties.

I think sometimes people long for things that remind them of home. Even if it isn't really better, it just reminds them of better times.

I've lived with Wegmans for over 3 years now. They are a good grocery chain but i have to tell you...I miss Publix subs & salads (macaroni, potato, etc.)

I'm just saying that everyone's taste is different. One man's meat is another man's poison. Etc,Etc. Etc. Or as one of my girl friends used to say "your taste is in your mouth" Oh, well........ I don't think she was talking about food.
