Hello, me and my husband were looking into moving to Florida. I have family in Orlando but dont want to live right in the city. I was looking at some smaller cities. Does anyone have an opinion on Lake Mary? How are the housing prices, jobs, crime and all that. We have no kids and would look for jobs once we settled there. Am i looking it to a good city or should i be searching a different one? Thanks!

While I am not a huge fan of Orlando...I feel if you live in Florida, at least be coastal. There are some lovely suburbs. Hopefully some Orlando folks will respond, as I know there are some pretty bad areas too. All depends on what you are really looking for in a hometown.

I used to have a friend who lived in Oviedo and it was a pretty nice little town with easy access to Orlando.
I would definitely look at the cities north of Orlando in Seminole County. That is where Lake Mary is located. Some of the other towns in that county are Oviedo, Sanford, Winter Springs, Casselberry, Altamonte Springs, and Longwood. The towns there are much nicer than Orlando and the Seminole County school district is ranked #7 out of 67 in the state (should you decide to have kids). Violent crime is pretty low in that county. From most areas in Seminole Co. it should take you about 45 minutes, more or less, to get to the beach.

How easy it will be for you to find jobs in the greater Orlando area will depend on what you do for a living. Some fields are better represented than others. You might want to start looking for a job before moving. Many people, even well educated ones, are finding it difficult to find a job in FL right now. What industry you are in makes a difference.

The median housing price in Seminole is in the ballpark of about $250k. Lake Mary is a bit upscale so prices are probably a bit higher there, maybe around $300k. The average household income in that city is higher than the state average as well. I would rent for a while and look at buying maybe around the end of 2008. House prices in Florida are dropping by the month you would probably get a much better deal in 9 months or so. If you buy in Seminole Co., you will probably get better rates on your homeowners insurance. It's much higher in most of the coastal areas but still fairly manageable in the inland areas unless sinkholes are an issue in your neighborhood.

Ok I have lived in florida my whole life.
I live in lake county aprox. 25 50 miles north of Orlando.
Yes Lake county is one of the fastest growing rural areas. Horses/small farms etc.
A brand new hospital and alot of wonderful family living.
The crime is practilly non -existant compared to other areas in florida.
In my area people still leave there doors open (Not me) but some do.
If you love bargains the prices are great.
Schools.... not sure to be honest. Maybe you can check on line though ok?
e-mail me if you want any info on this or some other areas

Check out the property taxes and home insurance costs before buying that dream home. Also, look at the public services, i.e. water, sewer etc..see if it's available and/or being maintained, or too small to service the area. The schools are a big issue even if you don't have kids. Don't buy a home just based on the price. If the home is located in a poor school district you will have a problem selling it. Check the ease of traffic to the stores that you will shop at most frequently. I live 15 minutes from anything I need so it's a big savings for me in time and gas.

Kissimmee is very nice. I went there in nov2008. I loved it and i plan to move in 2 years. The housing prices looked good. for a 3to 4 bedroom they wanted 875.00. The same price that i am paying in pa. I do not know about the jobs but you could google them and go on www. flordia.com and hit on jobs, houses and apartments. Good- luck.

I live in Lake Mary. If you're planning on moving here, this is a great choice. Actually, this post would probably do better on the Orlando forum, not to mention, it is old.
