I 33 years old guy who just moved to Florida from Southern CA and am living in Ocala at with relatives and trying to make a life in Florida.
Where are all the classy people?
I got a gym membership at this gym here in Ocala that is a good deal but has equipment from the 1970's (which is fine). Most people that work at the front desk have no customer service skills to speak of. They just look at you when you check in or leave. Never smile or act upbeat when you leave. They have this strange split personality where when they see someone they know they instantly smile from ear to ear but don't act anything close to that to the members or anyone they don't know. The actual gym members have this ***** kicker vibe and remind me of the people you see on cable tv prison documentaries. Only about 2 percent of the gym members seem to have class. I always feel worse after I leave that place.
The stores around here have employees with absolute zero customer service skills! They never smile or thank you for doing business there.
The only places that are remotely ok are the bookstores and it's really only a little but better. I will be reading and trying to enjoy coffee or something and I'll hear this obnoxiously loud male red neck laugh out of no where (I know that sounds strange but out of no where comes this loud AAHAHAHA laugh. I will sit there and act as though I never heard it but everyone else looks up to see if they are being laughed at. It's depressing and dysfunctional).
I just got back from Wal Mart and there was a man in his 50's who let out this nasty loud belch in front of 20 women and children and then spit all over the entrance side walk on the way out. It's so trashy.
There are almost no refreshing women who dress classy and are stylish.
I'm trying to stay positive but this place is draining me.
I am in the twilight zone.
Where are the people with class?

Sounds like you moved to Scranton. Most of the people here are just the same as you describe.

First you anger the "girly men" on the San Diego board, then you give it a whirl here, next! Perhaps you can pave the way for the rest of us low lives by developing a little class yourself. A good place to start is stop being so critical of every one else right off the bat and work on your own personality. Being offensive is far from a classy trait.

I grew up on in the DC area, moved to CA, and am now in FL.

I'm am talking about class, not the CA governor's favorite words.

Are Tampa/St Pete or Orlando areas pretty cool?

Not much class in Orlando either unfortunately. There seems to be an extensive amount of trash here in Orlando, but not really the white rednecks you are speaking of, although we have those too, but not in abundance. We have some "classy" people but I think they are more superficial and pretentious if you ask me... i.e. Millenia Mall. I probably make more money (as does my wife) than many of the people that come to have valet parking in front of the mall so everyone can see. Or they are carrying all thier bags, act like they are better than everyone else, but yet probably dont even work.

Quick story about the Millenia Mall a while ago... a famous person walked into the store my wife and I were in, so I calmly and quietly said to the person next to me, "there's ___" and the woman looked at me, and said something like, "so what? I live next to celebrities, its not a big deal around here." First of all she spoke to me like I was a tourist (I am probably one of the only FL born residents in the entire mall besides my wife) and she was just plain rude. Pissed me off.

I don't know, but the kind of people who don't let that kind of thing go after a few days are usually New Yorkers!

read your post. walmart, bookstore and gym are not places to see a lot of class.
class starts with ourselves. you already made a good start an interest in books. good. build on that, a love of books, and you will find yourself with the better people.
i would have done a better post for you, but your profile is a complete blank.

As long as you have to be where you are, the best thing to do is stop being judgemental about other people. When you do that, you are doing neither yourself or them a favor. This may not always be easy advice to follow, but it's always the wise thing to do. Good Luck.
