Hello my family and I currently live near Phoenix and are contemplating moving to Gainesville. Is Gainesville a friendly town and can people make relationships being new to the area?

As long as you dress in Orange and Blue you should be fine.

Thanks to the university primarily it's a transient town and people tend to be friendlier as a result, versus similar more stable small cities where everyone knows everyone else seemingly.

A lot of it depends on your age and interests. If you are plugged into the University somehow as a student or you have a job there, you shouldn't have any problem meeting new people.

The people that sometimes feel left out in Gainesville are singles over 30. The city can feel geared towards families and college students. But it's very individual. Are you friendly and outgoing or do you have "issues"??? A lot of people seem to think a move will get them over their "issues" but they just bring them where they go and then bash the city because it didn't miraculously fix you. Life doesn't work like that.

I am single (over 30) and have been in Gainesville for about 2 years. It is a very friendly place for any age group. I've lived all over Florida for many years and I must say Gainesville so far is the friendliest town. Cedar Key ( a short drive away heading west) is a wonderful little west coast beach town if you're wondering where you can find the closest beach. Best of luck!

It is a town in segments -- college areas, low- to mid-income apartments, professionals, retirees -- with an appeal based on shared interests. Public schools west of I-75 are generally good.
