The sun/heat could be responsible for the madness.
Can a heat wave make you insane?

In your view, does FLA have a monopoly on odd crimes like the ones you posted?

While we certainly have our share of crime, it isn't any worse than anywhere else I have lived. One factor is that we have a growing population, and the other is that we have 12 months of warm weather (freezing weather tends to keep people indoors more and therefore inactive).

I bet you could find a list that long from most States that have our population. So if you come to visit you won't have to be packing heat !

We also have a media at large fixated on exposing anything "weird" coming out of Florida. Anyone with any sense of large urban US cities knows much weirder things happen in them than here, but oddly enough rarely hear about them in the media. Florida seemingly suffers the "popular girl" syndrome where the envious look for flaws....especially in the winter months.

Weird stories get the news stories. You probably didn't see the "35 shot in 36 hours in Chicago" weekend last. Or the story where the Chicago police chief at the direction of the Mayor falsified the crime reports.

National news loves to repeat unusual FL stories while ignoring what is going on in its own back yard.

Try reading the newspapers on line in any state with a major population and you will clearly see that everything you listed does indeed happen elsewhere as well as in FL.

Of course nobody heard about the young lady busted for shoplifting. They searched her and her stuff. In a bag she was carrying was a dead fetus.

NYC

Kid starts fire in densely populated apartment building. One cop dies from his injury. Kid said he started the fire because he was bored.

NYC

a forty something year old man was killed while "surfing" on the top of a subway car.

Any city, any state is going to produce stories just as weird and sad.

Florida is always on a lot of minds because most of them would rather be here.

These crazy people aren't the new arrivals, these are Floridians.

I think they are just trying to scare off the hordes of Yankees from moving in.

If the drivers don't get you, the gun nuts will.
If the gun nuts don't get you, the gators will.
If the gators don't get you, the skeeters will.
If the skeeters don't get you, skin cancer will.
If skin cancer doesn't get you, a sinkhole will.

In terms of population size, New York and Florida are about the same and are only exceeded by Texas and California. It stands to reason that the states with the most people will tend to have more weird news. There's no denying that we get a disproportionate share of the coverage, though. Ever since the media was outraged by the "hanging chad" debacle, the media and the comedians have made Florida the object of their humor and ridicule. Some of it is deserved, some not, but any state that has the population size we do is likely to produce a "target rich environment".
