I qualify for low cost housing and section 8 and financially right now need it desperately but there are long waiting list in Orlando where I live. I have been told that some counties don't have those long waiting lists and my chances are much better of getting into housing quickly. Does anyone have any experience with this and can offer some advice to me? Thanks

Orange and Osceola County are very economically distressed plus Seminole County and Lake County are probably taking overflow, so it might stand to reason that maybe less populated counties might be the way to go. Off the top of my head I'd recommend checking out places like Sumter County, Putnam County, Hardee County, DeSoto County and Citrus County.

I guess you're still waiting for the voucher, then. From what I've read, many counties in Florida (as well as in other parts of the country) don't even have waiting lists anymore, they select applicants by lottery, and it can take years ( according to their websites) for someone to be approved for Section 8 housing.

The counties mentioned by the other poster who responded here may still have waiting lists, and it's possible they aren't too long. I'd check their websites to see what the situation is in each county.
