Know what I dont get? how some people think that individual sense of safety should be a consensus standard. so that one person who feels safe where he is, thinks that another person who adopts additional measures to feel safe must be some kind of "nutcase".
"Civilization" really is nothing but a concerted effort to fool folks into thinking that they dont live in a jungle.
But anyone watching knows that we do.

How many watched 'civilization' break down in Baltimore, Ferguson. The stores that did not get burnt had people with big guns standing in front of them, and who were willing to use them.

You want to see civilization break down? Lose the electric grid. No electricity to run the water system, keep the refrigeration on in grocery stores, unable to pump gasoline and diesel.

As I see it we walk a fine line between "civilization" and a total breakdown of society. As you say, any loss, even temporary, of the creature comforts and conveniences we have come to expect can and does trigger unrest, and and violence against one's fellow man. Consider the fights that break out over the latest and greatest "must haves" in short supply in the throngs that partipate in Black Friday sales, or stand in lines waiting for the latest Air Jordan sneakers or the newest I-Phone or I-Pad. When we are down to competing with others for the basic necessities of life, it takes no imagination to know the bloodshed will be widespread.
