Many community pools are heated to almost 90-degrees Fahrenheit. (The walking cadavers think anything less than that is "chilly"!) Of course, the "Florida Wound-Care Centers" must love this, since the bacteria in these pools can multiply like wildfire and infiltrate their boo-boos like crazy!

Wink Tipping the Florida Scale

I sure wish that I could move to Florida, if only for the sunshine and beaches. The only positive comments that seem to emulate from the staunchest supporters of the Florida lifestyle, however, appear to center entirely around the climate. Sometimes you might offer the absence of a state income tax as an incentive, but overall, the climate is the lone reason to move to your state in the eyes of the most vocal. The number one way to raise the ire of the strongest Florida advocate?... complain about the climate.

As I personally approach retirement age, I have tried to place the positives and negatives of various areas of the country on the proverbial balance scale. On the positive side, I/we have the comfortable weather for 6 months of the year in Florida, the beaches for 12 months, and ???. (The state income tax means little when one is retired). The negative side is completely skewed with the extensive needs and costs of living in Florida. Realistically, if one does not have an impressive bankroll and/or a high demand occupation, how can one afford to make all of the sacrifices to live in 6 months of the amazing weather and 6 months of grueling weather ?

Florida's problems are much deeper than a deflated real estate market. Sunshine caused your beautiful state to grow, but will never be able to sustain it in the long term. Until the issues of livable wages, improved schools, affordable housing, etc. are confronted and solved, Florida is a lousy option to relocate.

Did I forget to mention the rotten-egg reek of sulpher ladened re-claimed water that apparently the entire state uses to water it's lawns (inexplicably while it's raining outside )

Not in Weston. We water our lawn with dollar bills .

Seriously, for whatever reason the water isn't reclaimed. That's probably not too environmentally friendly, but oh well.

No one's opinion is more or less valid than anyone else's; regardless if their experience has been bad or good in FL.

Who are we to so harshly judge? If someone can tell me why they have the right to judge a person's experience & feelings, please do.

To attack someone's opinion with the "you can't adjust", "you didn't do enough research", the sarcastic "bye bye have a nice trip" or "actually, let me just judge your opinon b/c it doesn't agree with mine"...that's just sad & desperate.

Same goes to those who insist on finding flaws in the opinions of those who are quite content in FL.

Yeah, it's basically a relocation forum...but that doesn't mean everything is going to be all peachy & perfect. Nor is it all hell on earth.

Both sides of the story deserved to be told & to be respected. There is freedom of speech & expression. If someone has a problem either way with what people say about FL, they should not come on the site if it upsets them so greatly that they need to start attacking & berating other places & opinons. I want to hear the bad & good. I don't want to hear the excessive rose colored glasses outlook nor the overexaggerated doom. There is no such thing as "perfect".

The great thing about this country is just all the places there are to live, explore & see. And how we are so lucky to have the choice to stay or leave.

I read the OP in this topic and I am sorry that she doesn't like Florida. But let's just say I am up here in Maine with about 2 feet of snow on the ground and more on the way later this week. The lows have been in the single numbers and low teens and the highs have been in the upper teens to low 20s. The wind has been biting now for several days.

My beautiful brand new car is now ugly and covered with dirt and snow. I would wash it but it would just be covered back up as soon as I drove it off the lot. Then the water would get in the locks and freeze the locks. Everything is dead. Even on the sunny days which are few and far between it's still too cold to do anything.

What I wouldn't give for some palm trees...or any kind of trees that still have leaves for that matter and some grass that isn't covered in snow. It's so dry your skin starts to peel.

As for your problem with education that can happen anywhere. There are moron teachers in all 50 states. As long as the teachers unions are in charge of the school systems the education system won't get fixed. The teachers unions are more interested in indoctrinating the kids into liberalism instead of teaching reading, writing, and math and that's why the schools are in the shape they are in. I grew up in MA and I had a teacher in 3rd grade who called me a "useless nothing" in the middle of the whole class. When my parents went to complain to the principal he just said "Oh, she's old and is about to retire in a few years." Translation: We can't get rid of her because she's in the union and tenured.

Of course if this happened now my parents could have sued the living daylights out of the school and the city but back 25+ years ago that didn't happen.

Oh, yeah: just another one the stenches Floridians get "used" to. Ick.

And has anyone else noticed the noise pollution?? There could be 25-mile-an-hour winds, rendering the smallest of pollen particles thoroughly and untouchably airborne, and there will still be an army of dudes hopelessly marching around with their 200-decibel leaf-blowers.

There could be a drought rendering negative grass-growth. But the mowers will be out there, to cut the brown stuff down to sand.

Of course, we should be sending out kudos to these workers, as these are jobs that politicians tell us that Americans won't perform.

For those who look forward to their serene cup of coffee on their Florida lanai in the morning, seriously consider delaying insertion of your hearing aid(s) until the little men are out of sight.
