I was trying to figure out which areas of Florida are the most environmentally clean . With no coal plants, no nuclear plants, no polluting companies, clean air and water, lots of trees , things like that. Does anyone know which are the greenest cities in Florida?

Palm Coast has been designated a "Tree City USA." They are seriously into trees! There are requirements for every homeowner and business and the city is always planting more along roads and in the medians. People wrote letters to the editor when a renovation to a shopping center was planned and they were worried about what would happen to the trees. Lots of clean air except when there's a forest fire. Ironic, huh? We have lots of parks, preserves, bike paths and green spaces. Recycling too.

Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville looks to have the cleanest air, nationally ranked the highest (#16) with places on all three major air pollution measures which includes ozone, short-term particulates and long-term particulates. Cape Coral-Fort Myers is #20 and a three way tie at #25 with Miami-Ft Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, Orlando-Deltona-Daytona Beach and Lakeland-Winter Haven.

Look at that! Lakeland/Polk County made a good list.

Sarasota/Bradenton is on that list. Lots of water, trees, clean business, green building, etc.

There are 3 nuclear plants in Florida and about 15 coal plants. . The question is how far away is safe from a nuclear plant? And how far away is safe from coal plants? They both can pollute the air, land, and water and the nuclear power plant is at risk for a meltdown which can do far worse. Even ones that have been closed are still at risk and can cause problems.

I have read 50-100 miles from a nuclear plant is safe and anywhere from 10-30 miles from a coal plant so everyone has a different opinion.

Unfortunately staying a safe distance away can rule out many of the cities you all mentioned.

There are also many other types of polluting companies in Florida still causing issues and also lots of brownfield areas damaged by polluting companies years ago that are being cleaned up to be used again but may still be unsafe and unhealthy.

Its been very confusing. Doing all this research. The more I learn the more difficult it becomes to make a choice.

Put more emphasis on being away from coal. Nuclear rarely have accidents, and we don't have tsunamis in Florida. As for Chernobyl, (Which is I'm not mistaken, Fukushima is based off of), that was Soviet engineering, put in Ukraine, which is the worst you can think of. Nuclear isn't that bad.

Thanks for the advice . Very helpful. While I do agree coal pollutes in many ways a lot more than nuclear
doesn't nuclear still put out radioactive waste?

I found this website that may be helpful to all of us trying to figure out which city is greenest in Florida.

The sun sentinel has a database of the major polluters in each city and to see if the pollution is rising ,and for more detailed info you can visit the EPA's website.
