I pay $4000 in property taxes on a 1700 sq ft cookie cutter home in a plce that looks like hell due to the foreclosures. Over priced homes on door mat properties. Yawn... Having to transport your child several miles further because you want traditional schooling rather than year round. No culture. <--- You know the only culture you're gonna get in Orlando if that is where you're moving? Do you speak spanish? Very small pockets of caribbean restaurants. And??? Only latin food is Mexican. Lacking Catholic churches. RDU airport is nice. Congestion traffic but not so bad now due to unfortunate unemployment rising. You wanna complain about traffic and congestion? Are you seriously considering Central FL then? People keep denying unemployment is not high. Tell that to those being forced out of their homes and into apartments if they're lucky. NC was not hit as hard as FL. FL runs on construction and real estate, which aint happenin' right now. Lower wages, higher cost. Auto and home insurance rising. Hi DUI rates. Higher state tax and going up. Very small downtown. Glenwood is only small strip of bars. Nothing to brag about. Beach is 2hrs + away.
Yeah it's Utopia alright!!!

I'm not even going to respond anymore. You are complaining about things that are WORSE in Central FL. Have you ever been to Orlando? We are known for crime, road rage, rude people, low paying jobs, high unemployment rates, transients, and congestion.

Less diversity <--- that is incorrect, even though I think diversity is overrated. Ever been to S FL? Oh yeah, its a real treat, LOL. worse weather Tampa better weather? Do you like heat and humidity for 7 months out of the year? I definitely don't. , no waterfront. Not saying it's a bad place, just don't see it as a utopia as it is being touted by a few here. And other than Asheville, Wilmington and Chapel Hill - there is no place in NC I would even want to visit, let alone live. Asheville is lovely, we had a vacation home there for a few years, but the economy is based on tourism, no professional jobs unless you bring your own, and has a bunch of overpriced real estate. And the weather is COLD and grey for many, many months. As others have said, many went to NC a few years ago after the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 and our now coming back, <---one out of 50 - and that is being generous. or have already returned. But yea, I guess for those that want a more "Southern" lifestyle, the more southern, the better less diversity that depends on where you are, like I stated before. Tampa is not more diverse than Raleigh, lots of fried food and some cold weather I guess it's probably OK.

It's all a matter of opinion I guess.

Clearly you have not learned that comments made in forums are generally nothing more than opinions so you need to relax and quit getting all worked up.

By the way you responded to Mike, and being that you're from NYC, I suggest you come down to FL. You'll fit right in man...... welcome.

But I cant speak for her, but I can guarantee she is going to miss things about NC. Not shoveling snow and warm year round weather cant compare to the sanity of living in NC, the friendlier people, less crime, less road rage, etc... the people in South FL especially can be really nasty.

On the Contrary Scientific, our family is very happy here so far...its different than NC...I dont think that anywhere u go the grass is greener its what one is looking for....South Florida for us so far works, we have met some very nice people we have became friends with my children already have friends...and I AM FROM NY and Jewish so we really fit in here which by the way was never an issue for us since we arent religious or anything, but the culture here is different than NC...I also have family here, my parents are here 4 months outof the year , my great aunt lives in Boynton, my aunt and uncle live in Hillsboro Beach AND I have never lived in florida before, although 12 years ago we almost in Wellington...LOL.....but after living in different places as we have, I can say we really like it here.we havent encountered nasty people, and were very surprised how nice people are at least in the area we live in..and my dh have met people from work who has either family or a friend that moved to NC who want to come back, so again it really depends on ones wants and needs, because every state has their flaws, their pros and cons and I dont think anyone is Foolish for moving to NC nor do I think anyone is foolish for moving to FL...what is right for you or I isnt always right for the next person or family, and everyone's situation is different...
and no we wouldnt go back to NC and we wouldnt go back up north either...once we left NC i said well I95 goes south...lol

In Palm Beach County, just South of Martin County, the schools in the individual towns such as Jupiter, FL, are at or better than Wake County's better suburbs, such as Cary:
Jupiter Schools - Jupiter Florida School Ratings - Public and Private (10) -- Jupiter
Cary Schools - Cary North Carolina School Ratings - Public and Private (9) -- Cary
Charlotte, NC's schools are ranked a "6" ... which is on par with Palm Beach County's "overall" ranking, and surprising, since Palm Beach County is a huge source of ESOL immigration students that tend to bring scores down in immigrant communities.
The fawning over places like North Carolina as being "better than anywhere in Florida" is getting old. Outside of the progressive college influenced "Research triangle" and the hippie tourist village of Asheville, there isn't much that would compel me to ever want to live there. Who cares, honestly? I mean, not trying to be mean, but you always getting defensive about S FL whenever places like Raleigh are mentioned gets old too.
You can find "nice people" everywhere in Florida. Seems an awful lot of people that spend their time whining and complaining, however, end up not getting warm receptions, or find themselves going, "why is nobody nice to me?" Maybe because people can sense the oozing, non-verbal contempt for everyone and everything around them? The people in NC are "hands-down" friendlier than they are in FL. FL is filled with NY'ers, foreigners, and grumpy retirees - lets be honest. Orlando and S FL are perfect examples of that bad mix. Where in NC can you say that? Charlotte? By far, friendlier than the Tampa's and Miami's. Raleigh? No. W-S? No.
I'm not saying the place is perfect, by good grief. I have never seen so many angry, rude, road raging idiots in my life. How do you explain the fact that I have seen more road rage and inconsiderate a$$holes in one place (Orlando) in 1 year than I have seen in a dozen yrs in NC? How do you explain that? And Orlando isnt (yet) as bad as S FL.
My neighborhood is full of very nice people (most are not "natives") -- the kind that introduce themselves when you move in (and not just to ask you where you go to church) monthly happy hours at someone's home, invite you to parties and gatherings at their homes, organize community events to better the community, neighbors that stop and talk in the street to one another. Oh -- AND I live in South Florida, the "problem" area of Florida. That's good - but that's NOT the norm in S FL. It is in Asheville, Raliegh, etc... You havent lived in NC so you really cant compare and contrast like I can ---> the difference is larger than large - the people, the way they treat eachother, the way they drive, everything is far more civil. It's that simple.
|
I live in NC and I WILL tell you that there are plenty of rude natives here. Tailgating with the pickups and cutting you off. Silent rude gestures and stupid fancy talk cause they are intimidated by out of towners. Don't have to be northerners that they are afraid of will take their jobs.
They shutdown their own businesses and sell out their farms to developers and sell us homes. Now who is the self respecting southerner that would not sell out??!!

You bet. I'll need to degauss myself from this NC to Northerner poison they are trying to inflict on me. LOL....
I know where my American green dollars are well deserved. We develop this state for them, give them jobs, shave them down and teach them to speak and this is how they thank us.....
That's ok, the tobacco and furniture industry is killing them already. High Point residents were angry because their own sold out to furniture manufacturing overseas and they have time to cuss and hate the northerner... What hurt them most is that they had to go to school and get a new trade which required studying. Generations in that area knew nothing about education but at least Google is trying to help them out. Yup another out of towner company. I don't hear much mention about the illegal aliens being an issue whom they hire here to work the fields and everything else. Does it not sound familiar?? About a few hundred years ago on the plantations. Yup they haven't changed...
I'm outta-nc!!!

Thanks for the post. This says a lot to those who have never left NC. Florida has many nice spots and people. I hope to be there as soon as I can sell here. I also have family there who are quite happy with the jobs and making a living for years.

Berryjuice, thanks for sharing. Sounds like the place I want to be. Vacation all the time. We've been pretty miserable here only cause it's not for us. Some of the YANKEE talk you hear on this forum is only cause they are hiding behind a keyboard and would not dare tell you to your face although the feeling is ingrained.
I have family in the Lakeland area which is well positioned between Tampa and Orlando. So I would say anywhere in Central Florida sounds good so far. I'm in IT and have been scouting some job boards. Pay in Orlando seems higher than here by about $10/hr from what I'm seeing. I'm also being told that pawn shops down there alone pay $10-12/ hr plus commission so that would be good for my college age son. That's what his cousin is doing down there while in school. That beats the dept stores up here at minimum wage.
You mention that "despite the problems in florida". Can you elaborate a bit on that? We have new neighbors here from Florida and I am seeing many plates moving up here although I don't anticipate them all staying permanently. I'm just curious cause I know NJersians are moving here cause of cheaper housing and taxes which isn't all of a reason to move. That's hind site talk. Is that the same in Florida?? My family is quite happy down there.
