Hi everyone!

I'm back home in California after an interesting, exhausting, and informative trip all the way around the perimeter of Florida as well as through the middle a couple times. The purpose of my trip was to find and pick the city and I'm pretty sure I have! Atlantic Beach seems like the perfect fit for me and has MOST of what I'm looking for.

The thing that surprised me the most about Florida is how pet UN-friendly the beaches are. Living in California, it never even occured to me that there would be places dogs weren't allowed on the beach, much less almost the entire state! As I drove, I got out of the car at every beach and almost every beach access. Almost without fail, there was a sign posted that said "NO ANIMALS ALLOWED ON BEACH." Wow. I talked to lifeguards and residents in many places to get a sense of how enforced the rule is. One lifeguard said he almost got arrested just for having his dog in the car in the beach parking lot while he looked at the waves.

There were a few notatble exceptions, Jupiter being one. I really did love Jupiter, but there is absolutely no place where you can live ON the ocean. The closest you could get was across A1A.

Atlantic Beach, however, allows dogs on the beach. It has a great little town center area with fantastic restaurants, cute little boutiques, a great health food store, Starbucks, nightlife, etc. I talked to many people who live there that love it. Also, the age range seemed to be what I'm looking for, lots of people my age!

Although I am set on renting for my first year, a realtor I met with there told me condos ON the ocean are more expensive than I thought, so I need to do some research on that part.

I can't thank you enough for all your advice and help. If anyone has any thoughts about life in Atlantic Beach, I'd love to hear them!

I'm glad you found your spot. Sarasota County is a haven for dog owners. However, that is nowhere near where you chose. If you change your mind, Venice, Englewood, Manasota Key, Sarasota are super duper pet friendly, and also have Dog Beaches. Best of luck wherever you end up. Welcome to FL...eventually. As for Atlantic Beach (in Jacksonville) it's a nice place....watch out for crime in neighborhing Jax Beach. Neptune Beach is nice too. I think you'll like it. Jacksonville was definitely not our cup of tea at all, but you may really like it.
