I have lived in New Tampa for close to 2 years. I really loved it. My initial job transfer was for Lakeland. I was able to visit Lakeland for a few days; however, you can't find out much by just visiting a few days. There may be an opening in Tampa as well. My husband works in Lake Wales; however he says that New Tampa may be a better fit for us coming from Long Island New York. Is Lakeland generally rural, and would have to drive to Tampa for certain things? And are there risks of flash floods and problems with flooding in Lakeland. There was flooding in Tampa but being in New Tampa, we were so far from the water that flooding was not an issue. But Lakeland has lakes all over. Would I be safe from flooding in Lakeland Highlands? I need some input from someone who knows Lakeland well. Thanks.

Lakeland doesn't have flooding issues unless you build in a swamp. The terrain in Lakeland Highlands is very hilly for Florida so I suppose it is possible to have water problems if you are at the bottom of a hill and have poor drainage. Lakeland Highlands is also considered a very good area. In my opinion it's the best area in Polk County.

We don't drive to Tampa for anything except to visit family and friends. I know a lot of people who go to Tampa for sporting events, occasional shopping and the airport. As for being a better fit I would imagine New Tampa is more like Long Island than Lakeland but I can think of two families I know from Long Island who live in near-by Winter Haven and they seem quite content.

If your husband works in Lake Wales and lives in New Tampa his commute will be very difficult. The two are over 60 miles apart.
