The Social Security Administration tells us.....

"This information is at a granular level but extremely helpful. Since everyone pays into the Social Security system, this is a good sense of how many people are earning income in the US. According to this information 151 million Americans earned some sort of wages or compensation in 2011. The median wage in the US per person is $26,695. This tells us a lot since the median household income is at $50,500. Since the Census data looks at households, this data hones in on individual wage earners. 66 percent of Americans earn less than $41,212."

The paragraph tells us as lot. Across the U.S.A. an average person who works comes in with $12.83 an hour median wage. It also tells us that 2/3rds of American workers earn less than $20 an hour.

Florida Median Hourly Rate by Job

Registered Nurse (RN)$25.33
Administrative Assistant $13.87
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) $17.90
Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) $10.53
Medical Assistant $12.80
Office Manager $15.47
Customer Service Representative (CSR) $12.17

The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics states:

Industries with the highest levels of employment in the retail sales occupation:
Annual mean wage
Clothing Stores $21,890
Department Stores $21,950
Other General Merchandise Stores $21,890
Building Material and Supplies Dealers $28,480
Sporting Goods, Hobby, and Musical Instrument Stores $22,150

Here we have from the BLS the hourly wage for a retail sales person in different areas....
New York-White Plains-Wayne, NY-NJ $12.84

Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale, CA $12.39
Chicago-Joliet-Naperville, IL $12.33
Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, TX $12.40
Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA $11.95
Dallas-Plano-Irving, TX $12.58
Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale, AZ $11.61
Washington-Arlington-Alexandria,
DC-VA-MD-WV $12.12
Philadelphia, PA $13.07
Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington,
MN-WI $11.44
Jacksonville, FL $11.47

The point of the post is to show that wages paid in FL for an average job is in line with the rest of the US.
The constant barrage of "no jobs" and "low paying jobs" in FL compared to the rest of the U.S. is not correct.

One half of the states have an unemployment rate equal or greater than FL

My wife and I worked and lived in Florida for over 40-years. We always made a very comfortable living and earned salaries comparable to those in other areas of the country. But, I can remember keeping track of salaries in my line of work and going back to the company a few times with salary surveys ... to justify upward adjustments.

IMO, the problem many employees (particularly young college students) face is that they go to work at a sub-industry level, hoping that increases will help them catch-up. But, of course, that doesn't happen, because the industry average also continues to increase. Others change jobs, hoping to catch-up, only to discover that the increase over their previous level, still doesn't get them up to where they should be.

Florida is no different than anywhere else, when it comes to good people who know and protect their value in the marketplace. But, those who simply expect 'the company' to take care of them, will likely find themselves 'a day late and a dollar short.'

A person in Florida making the average $12.83 gets more for their money than a person in New York making $12.83 Just a few items, in NY there is a high city and state income tax, electric rates are a lot higher in NY, about 8 months or heating costs, [costs more than FL A/C]

Yes, because the barrage of evidence presented on this forum (and elsewhere) is refuted by your solitary post.

Perhaps it depends on the skill, occupation and demand == My bf in Florida - administrative, Customer Service--- earns substantially more than my dfs in NYC in same occupation.

What's sad is that 2/3rds of American workers earn less than $20 an hour.

I see some C-D readers cant stand a factual look at an angle but have no problem consistently spewing the same mis-information time after time.

I agree Vaughn. However if everybody did earn $20 an hour certainly the price of everything would go up and everyone would need to earn $25 a hour to keep up.

It sure does make a difference. The more u have to offer an employer to more that employer is willing to pay.
